My friend Marv brought back my 238E, it looks and runs well now. I was wondering what kinds of trains the 238e was sold with "back in the day"? I have a set of O gauge Blue Comet cars with it, but the gunmetal loco and blue cars don't look right to me, and my freight cars are 2800 series, which look like standard gauge cars with an O gauge loco. Thanks for your ideas!

When I got my 238E for Xmas 1936 it came with aluminum over light blue 600, 601, 602 cars that had latch couplers. The whistle tender had a manual box coupler.

Gentlemen,

The 238E & the 259E both came with 2600 series rolling stock, however most were different cars, with different type couplers, depending on the train set.  There were both work trains sets and passenger trains sets available for both.  The 264 work train also came with 2600 series rolling stock, I have never seen a 264 with passenger consist however, only the 238E & 259E.  Remember however the 264 is actually the mid-sized Lionel Tin Plate engine & tender, it is sized between the 238E, 259E and the larger 263E & 260E steamers.  My father use to refer to the 264 as Lionel's 16 Gauge shotgun.   Lionel back then really fully covered the size spectrum with their Tin Plate trains, each of the train sets, got more expensive as they got bigger in size.  The 2660 Crane Car & the 810 Crane Car were very far apart in both size and cost, in that era.
