I recently bought a collection from a friend, and I received a 264E with a 265W tender.  I had first thought, that the two went together because the other two pairs of locomotives and tenders paired up.  I was considering repainting and plating the hand rails, but now that I know that it is a rarity, I might not.  There is only about 90% paint left, and where it is gone, there is a little rust.   I saw another post a guy had the same pair, but as the Greenberg shows, it doesn't look like the pair is correct.  I have very little experience with prewar, so anything you can help me with would be great.  Thanks.

The linked document is not a factory service manual item. Olsen's provides a fair number of supplemental pages.

According to the TCA book: Lionel Trains Standard of the World 1900 -1943,

the black 264E came with a black 265W tender in 1936 (uncataloged).

 

The train is yours to do as you please. I wouldn't even think about refinishing a train with 90 percent of it's paint, whether it was common or rare.

The black 264E and 265W tender was offered in only one outfit #292W and that was in 1936. The cars were 654, 652, 657.
 
There were two red 264E/265W combos offered. There were #291W "Red Comet"  (1936) and #6617EW w/610,610,612 red and aluminum cars (1936-38).

Well, I don't think that I should paint it, knowing what it is, so I will keep it original, but I lightly steel wool the nickel parts.  Ron, I guess the guy before me knew what he was doing, and either purchased the rest of the cars, or bout it as a set.  I think he bought the cars separate, because they all look brand new, with very few scratches.  I will post pictures of the set, but also, The engine doesn't seem to get very much traction, and with all of it's spinning, it can't haul five cars, those being three Pullmans, the 655 and a 3651.  None of the wheels are frozen, or near that.  Thanks for all of your help.

IMHO, if you steel wool the nickel parts, the patina of the engine will no longer match. Are they really that bad? A 78 year old toy shouldn't really have bright and shiny parts. I guess I am just one of those anti-restoration cranks.

When you steel wool the parts, it is possible to keep the patina, while adding shininess.  If you use sandpaper, you take off the patina for sure.  The parts still have patina in them, but now they have a little gleam.  I will post pictures soon.

I just finished cleaning it, I used the steel wool and I kept the patina, but also cleaned it up a bit.  I think it will look pretty nice on the new layout I am going to build.  In this collection, I also got a #249 with all three Pullmans which look brand new, and I also got an early Scout Locomotive, along with 9 red coal cars and 7 flatcars, all prewar.  I also got a #97, #98, # 397, a log loader, two stations, two light towers, red and green, and a rotating light tower that is silver.  I think this will be a pretty nice addition to the layout.

I agree. These tenders are correct with respect to the 264E, and some 265E's. Don't forget the 261TX for the silver streak and the 265WX for the blue streak. Specials with two drawbars instead of a coupler on the car end.

Nice Line up!  I didn't realize they were still dumping the 1685/6/7 cars when the CV came out.  That makes a nice set as well Originally Posted by jsrfo:

Here is the set I have, although I can tell that this "set" was patched together as the gondola and caboose are marked 3652 and 2657, and those two don't have the same coupler as the 654.  They work, and look the same, but obvious didn't come together as a set.  I still love them, and as soon as I finish my 6' steel bridge, I will post more pictures.
