Brian, the "death railway" photographs are very interesting!  So is the information that this was where the Bridge over the River Kwai story came from.

Just back from 4 weeks on the road......that included 8 days on Amtrak. I posted a log of my travels on the Real Trains forum if interested. 

Fullerton CA station from the East tracks. This station is served by Amtrak SWC, Amtrak California, Metrolink and Amtrak Surfliner. 

 My #1 Grandson's CN Wreck Train.

This thing looks like some kind of torture devise.

That's great, Ted!!  Reminds me of my first train set.  I had to save up money to buy it when I was about 12; 1968 or so.  I had a layout all through high school and while commuting to college.  When I started my first job out of state, I tore the layout down and packed the salvageable parts away in the building beside the house that had been my grandfather's plumbing shop.  I knew it got hot in there in the summer months, but never realized it would turn all the plastic parts soft.  I went back maybe 10 years later, and pulled them out to find the train and buildings were "sagging" greatly; kind of like your photo!  Oh well!!

Went to Portland today. I've been to the engine house where 4449 and other locos are, many times in the past. Still, I can rarely resist going back.

Note the "Gold Coast Flyer" plate which was attached to 4449 during the filming of the movie, "Tough Guys".
