My son is two and is very interested in planes and rocket ships. He is also adept at operating the Lionel trains.
Two of his favorite items on our layout are the helicopter car from the New York Central, and the barrel unloader.
I have been eyeing the Mercury Orbiter sets - wondering if they are any good? I understand there were some problems with the Alco traction engines?

Some engines had problems with running rough, others as smooth as anything.
I have this set, and my engine was one of the loud growlers, however with some postwar parts I was able to get it nice and quiet.
Its a great set! I love it. I have the original one too. Lots of play value with the cherry picker and mercury capsule launch car. ( it is fragile though)

I suggest looking for an operating satellite car. IMHO, they work great.
