This may be a bad idea for train track but I recently used crumpled up aluminum foil to polish up the wheels on one of my old bicycles. It did a great job removing rust and generally restoring the shine to both aluminum and chrome wheel rims and spokes (without any other chemicals) so I started to wonder if anyone has ever used it for tinplate track, either old Lionel tubular or Gargraves?

This was recommended by many posts on several different cycling forums so I thought I would experiment with some old track no longer on the layout, I was just wondering if anyone has tried it or has any thoughts on the subject either good or bad.

I have a mix of both old and new Gargraves track on my layout and there is a noticeable pickup/slowdown of engine speed when transitioning to and from the new sections so in addition to checking track pin and power lead connections I'm looking for alternatives to elbow grease and rubbing alcohol to clean the track.

I'm back.  I tried both sides of the aluminum foil (high shine and dull shine).  Absolutely zero dirt picked up.  From dirty Fastrack.  Nothing detectable on the foil, but a paper towel following the foil comes away dirty.  Myth Busted!

Perhaps it would be useful if the track were aluminum?

Outside of being metal, there isn't much that an old bicycle wheel has in common with O guage track.

Stick with the alchohol, it WORKS. Outside of that a mildly abrasive block like a "bright boy" or the eraser in Lionels maintenance kit will help more stubborn areas of oxidation.

The last time someone tried a "new type" of track cleaner the results were disasterous to say the least.

VERY TRUE - I recommend sticking with the tried and true - particularly since it works well enough.

Of course, if you really want to make aluminum foil transform old track fast, you can coat it with a little Simple Green first!
