I'm contemplating getting one of the AF Y-3 engines Charles Ro has on sale now but I have some concerns.

Can anyone please tell me what the overhang of the cab of this engine is measured from the center line of track using either AF Fastrack or SHS(now MTH) S-Trax. I guess even AF tubular would have the same issues.

Any help or diagrams would be appreciated.

Mark

You could issue special instructions to your dispatcher, to avoid meeting trains that would conflict on those curves - as if it was gauntlet track or a special oversize load.

Or you could convert your double-track mainline to CTC with passing sidings and single track on the conflicting curves, then run the trains alternately.

Or you could convert your passenger trains to shorter modern articulated cars. Or substitute bus service.

Or you could build a whole new bigger layout with larger clearances. Or not have big articulateds.

Just brainstorming.

Mark,

I had done the track work on the layout before having the articulated loco. I do have the Y-3 and you are correct, it is beautiful looking and running loco. I had purchased the Big Boy when it came available, next came the Challenger. The shock came when I found the Challenger to have more cab overhang than the Big Boy. The Y-3 will go I think anywhere a Northern will go. When running multiple trains with friends the mallets will be relegated to the outside loop on the home layout. I did some changes on my layout though so any of these can go anywhere on the layout when I run them alone.

Mark, I now with the layout plan you illustrate do fully realize that sometimes the room and possibility of certain items will not work for others. I do appreciate your drawing and thank you for your patience and an answer that comes without animosity, I much appreciate folks like you. Since you were kind enough to show your track plan I will see if I can add mine to this.

Hey Ray,  - sorry to interrupt the post, but thanks for the layout idea.  It works for me.

Hi Mark,

Yes I did, but I monitor the site with my cell phone, but have to be at work to reply (I refuse to sit in front of a computer at home).  However, I ordered the C&O Berk from my local hobby shop, my family has been dealing with for 2 to 3 generations.  (Hennings Lansdale)

You guys are making me itchy to retire and get my new ranch house!  I want a layout this is club usable.
