American Flyer AC Can motor conversion

With out seeing the motor and mount, I'd say the the can motor is slightly off center  or the hole is drilled at an angle from the mount. Thus the necessity of the "top" on the motor. Turning it over, it wouldn't go into the chassis and mesh with the driver gear.

Sounds like an interesting project, since the 312 is a common engine.

It may be to help you get the wiring correct, direction wise, these are dc motors and if using dc power on the track you want all the motors on your trains with the same polarity.

The S-'n-S website has pictures of their four can motor retrofit options. I see nothing obvious about the physical or shape aspects that requires a specific top and bottom designation.
