For my conversion of the Weaver GP38-2 to a GP40 I used an Atlas SD40 long hood (shortened a bit at the cab end) & an Atlas GP35 dynamics blister. They are available as spares from Atlas direct.

NOW a question for Sunday Shunter who did this conversion:

What type of fans did you use? 

 

I have the brass fan housings and grills from PSC. Unfortunately the grills do NOT have the diffuser [the button like object found in the center of the fan]

Later I went to Atlas O and purchased the SD35 Dynamic Brake housing w single exhaust stack as well as the four fans. While the Atlas O fans have the diffuser as well as free rotating fan blades, unbeknown to me and in the parts diagram on the Atlas O website, two sides of the fan rings come flat on each fan. Now this is an issue because in either the Atlas O SD35 Dynamic Brake Housing as well as the Des Plains Hobbies EMD Sd40/Gp40/Sd40-2 Radiator fan hatch the fan holes are circular-leaving a gap where the flat fan housing metts the fan hatches. A small but annoying issue.

I used Atlas fans as well. I'm not sure what you mean about flats on the rings? I assumed they were to help locate the fan housing properly in the shell, I didn't have any gaps/holes between them....

Thanks for your reply. I looking at various pictures on rrpicturearchives.net, I see on various roof shots of the Conrail unit that the fans did NOT have diffusers. I am going with the PSC rings.
