Atlas NYC F2s

Very nice Norm, your layout is coming along. The F units look fantastic. 

Great photos & video. Your scenery is just amazing.

Nice fit. I run Lionel F3 and weathered them using baby powder, some soot and a make up brush. It looks like you may have done something similar. Regardless, just love the realism that you've captured on your layout. Looks far better than most. Just goes to show how taking the time to incorporate a bit of creative artwork on a layout pays big dividends.

I really like your weathering on everything.

Thanks guys. I figure I should put some mileage on these things. I set them up with the fixed pilot on the powered A only when I first got them years ago. These must have been made during the time when Atlas had exploding coupler issues as one of my rear coupler boxes broke. Nothing a little JB Weld couldn't fix. I tried looking for new ones on their site but man that thing is slow and the descriptions are vague and there are no pictures. BTW, the fixed pilot setup isn't really that straightforward. I had to trim the coupler boxes back a bit.

These look awesome!  You really did a great job on them, and the light weathering really brightens up the details a lot, making them pop!  It's so hard to do it right on a black unit, as only lighter colored dirt and dust show up.  The low shots really accentuate the lower fuel tank; thanks for posting!

I could use a pair of dummy couplers for my powered AA's.  Dueling TMCC's busted both but I think I'll just convert to Kadee's .

  Beautifully delicate weathering touch there, Norm.  We have now completed collecting the entire roster of NYC's F2's.

Great video Norm. Would that be a Mullet River caboose bringing up the rear ?  If so. What did you use for trucks ?  Did the underside of the chassis allow for clearance of the larger 3 rail flanges ?  Been thinking of getting their B&A version.

Thanks you guys. Yes Dave, that is a Mullet River kit. I used San Juan T-section Bettendorfs for the trucks, slightly modded to work with 3 rail wheels.

Dueling powered units can be a problem for Kadees as well. They won't break, but they will come uncoupled. The slack created by the engines bumping back and forth will make the Kadees open up and separate.

Simply incredible! It's amazing how realistic the scenes are. It's like going back in time to the steam era but in color. 

The one A unit has a messed up TMCC.  Throttle response was either dead or jackrabbit take off.  With such actions it wasn't long before both dummy couplers broke.  I'm hoping once the TMCC is fixed and there's no undue stress,  the Kadee's will serve as a replacement without uncoupling.

Thanks again guys. Bruce, I wonder what mode your EOB is in, that is, if your engine has it (not sure if any of Atlas' 3 rail F units were issued with ERRCo cruise since mine were made). I tend to like 128 steps best as it responds to the boost button at startup to set it running at the first speed step. Then you can move the throttle slightly and wait a few seconds to increase the speed and let it respond. If you crank the throttle too fast (remember the cab-1 will issue speeds steps in increments of 5 when turning it like a faucet), the engines will speed up quickly especially in 32 step or cruise off modes.

  I suspected the EOB could be the root of the problem and that the repair was beyond my ability.  I sent if out for repair, although I'm beginning to think a complete refit with updated ERR would have been a better choice.  It has been gone way too long already so I'll probably return to collect it this week.

I'm pretty sure the units are set at 128 steps, since I was interested in the most sensitive of control.  I sure love how these things crawl under Legacy control.
