Here's one I've been looking for several years, I like the look of these for my Amtrak passenger trains.  I was being picky, and only wanted the separate sale one that had larger motors, cruise control, and RailSounds 5.  After having an eBay search active for over a year, one descended from the sky and I got it NIB for a little over half the MSRP, $244 vs. $399.  It came out of the box in perfect shape and runs like a top, so I'm a happy camper.  Thank you Trainz, I was surprised it wasn't bid up a lot higher.  Summer really is a good time to shop for trains.

Hi John,

I thought it might be you that outbid me.  I'm glad you got it.  I stopped bidding at $166.  I was going to bid near $300 as well, but decided I against it.   My #656 is feeling tired and old pulling 5 Amfleets around.  At least I have spare motors for it.

Enjoy it, from one Amtrak fan to another.

Nice find John. Those recently retired workhorses piled up millions of miles on the NEC (North East Corridor).

I am quite amazed there are no other readily available scale models of this engine in three rail. This engine and the Toasters pulled 3/4 million people every day on the NEC. Very soon they will all be replaced with the new Sprinters runnin the rails.

Shoot us a video if you get a chance John. Thanks.

Paul

Sorry I stole it from you Mike, but I've looked for quite some time.

I have a couple of the AEM-7 Toasters, one is the MTH Premier, and the other one is an Atlas that I'm going to upgrade to TMCC.  I always wanted one of the HHP-8 models as well. I now have a couple of choices of motive power to pull the Amtrak up the NE Corridor.

The set version comes up pretty regularly, but I've worked on those, and they use the anemic MiniCommander II board and have just a basic horn/bell board.  They also have tiny motors like many of the set engines, and I've had to replace a number of those for various engines as well.  I decided to hold out and see if I could score one of these with the decent motors, full Railsounds, and cruise.  I'm glad I waited.

Luckily my set version HHP-8 is still going fairly well.   It has taken two 30" falls onto a wood floor.  (Before the layout had the around the walls loop completed)   And after those two falls, the shell survived with only a scuff mark!  The engine makes a strange fluttering noise in reverse even after pushing and pulling 5 to 6 amfleets at high speed a few times a week the last few years.

John,

Could you post or send me a video of the RailSounds 5.   I've always been curious on how it sounds.   I've only seen one you tube video of this engine.  The audio on that video wasn't too clear.  I was surprised that it went for $244.  I'm glad we didn't bid the engine up beyond $300.   Congrats again on your purchase. You know who you can contact, if you ever have buyers remorse!

Now if someone would just make the ACS-64 sprinter in O gauge.

Nothing like waiting on the delivery truck to bring an item you've wanted for a long time!

John,

I'm glad that you finally scored . I most certainly hope that FedEx/UPS does not play basketball with it. Can't you just see some rookie going for a three pointer?......Ooops

Great locomotive!  I got a very special deal on one of these at Lionel's former Canfield Ohio open house.  Mike Reagan had taken great care of me with my set version HHP-8 which was a nightmare and had to be returned.  Lionel and Mike took extraordinary  care of the situation and I have a great outcome thanks to Mike and Lionel's customer service.  (If only they had made the TurboTrains)  I was asked not to say how much the upgraded HHP-8 was that day in Canfield.  I honor that request... but kudos to Lionel and Mike Reagan for resolving a bad situation by creating a very happy outcome!   Great locomotive.

The upgraded version with the larger motors, cruise, and RS5 is a nice piece.  It's one failing was it was a tad light, so I took a .45Cal "shot" at fixing that.   The added weight made a huge difference in traction.

Using .45 projectiles is a bit expensive aint it?? LOL   Long ago when I was into H.O. scale I made weights for coal cars out of automotive wheel balancing weights I would melt into a mold.    Can't beat the looks of what you did though !!!  LOL

Is there a danger of overloading the motors and/or electronics by beefing up the weight; that many .45s adds quite a heft!

I only added a bit over a pound, and before the weight, it was a bit less than four pounds.  Most similar size diesel/electric locomotives are several pounds more.  With the full cruise commander and the larger motors, I don't see the added weight as an issue.

There's another set on ebay now for anyone still looking #656 and 3 cars.

Note that the set locomotive is a vastly different product.  It has two very small flat-sided starter set motors and basic TMCC using the same board as the ERR Mini Commander II and a cheap sound board.

Here's a comparison of the motors.

Here's a comparison of the TMCC drive electronics.  Of course, the Cruise Commander also has the R2LC installed that is not shown here.

Ditto for the audio, a basic anemic horn/bell board vs. a full RailSounds 5.5 board.

The upgraded model uses the RailSounds powered motherboard to host the RS 5.5 board.
