Several of my steam locos from the MPC era (2-4-2s, 4-4-2s, etc.) have the 2-position E-unit with a double-wound motor field.  These were all made during the 1970s.  In several cases the E-units become balky and refuse to reverse once the loco gets warm.  It often takes multiple attempts, and sometimes the loco won't budge in EITHER direction.  Has anyone else experienced this?  The heavy die-cast 4-4-2s are the usual culprits, but even my plastic 2-4-2 gets balky once in a while.  The 2-position E-unit has almost no parts; I can't imagine what's going wrong.  Does anyone know the cause and how can it be remedied?  Thanks!

I would look at the motor.  With the shell off you can tell if the e-unit plunger moves from side to side as you change direction.  If it is then the motor may not be working once it warms up.  I would clean the armature and check the brushes and alignment.

 

If the e-unit is sticking once warm, you could try cleaning it and ensure no binding. G
