Hey guys!

I always wanted to do a TTX on the layout but the 89ft Atlas flats are way to long for my curves and I thought it was out of the question. After seeing Eric Lundgren's excellent TTX series I picked up MSB's 2 books on the subject. I wanted to see what TTX looked like in the mid 60's and was pleased to find that, while there were mostly 89ft cars in pool service, there were still many 50ft cars still on the rails! That's all I needed to get started on something during the summer. Was happy to see Atlas release some trailers in 60's paint schemes in Santa Fe and IC. I had High Ball Graphics do some trailer decals for me in B&O, EL, Reading, ACL, and SOU to start. Will add more to this post in the coming month with more info on modifying the trailers (shortening them) and modifying the Trainman 69ft flat for TTX service (look closely at the flat with the Reading Trailer which is an Atlas trailer shortened to 35ft).

Here's the train in action with the first 15 cars.....(almost had a roll off with the EL trailer!)

Don.

Your the man!! Never get sick of looking at your work and sometimes I buy it! Ha, Ha.

Dunno if I ever mentioned it but I bought 5 cars and a locomotive from a bloke in London worked for the BBC took me on a tour afterwards . All your stuff, I run the loco all the time it's an Atlas Lehigh Valley SW Switcher #875 (your Number).

Roo (Neville).

Excellent work and excellent video as always, Don!  A few questions for you...what is the source of the train sounds (the squeals, rail-grinding, clickety-clack, etc., not the locomotive engine sounds) that I hear in many of your videos...and how are they played?

Are they coming from a separate sound/speaker set up in your layout room, or are they dubbed into your video after shooting it?  Very realistic touch to your videos!!

Thanks guys and glad you enjoyed it!

A. Hey Joe- The sound is from real trains that I dubbed into the video with windows movie maker. Its super easy to collect railroad sound tracks from Youtube using the website http://www.youtube-mp3.org . The only restriction is the length of the movies you pick which should generally be about 5 minutes max. Find some train vids you like and copy and paste the link into the MP3 site and it will convert it for you. Once you have the mp3 you can download it to your computer and  use them in vids or just to listen to! .  It may sound crazy but I often listen to train sounds while I am working on the layout. Drives my family crazy because its fun to turn it up really loud (helps to have a 100 watt subwoofer) and rattle the dishes in the kitchen! I have attached a couple of my HD favorites.

All of that said, I took some of the small speakers from an old surround sound kit and mounted them under the rural part of the layout to pipe in ambient nature sounds (also available on youtube) . I am sure someone could figure out how to install a little sensor to trigger a short sound track to provide sound effects for a passing train?. I would be a buyer for sure

Try George

His modules can be triggered by various means.

He will even load your own sounds.  I sent him a file of waves and seagulls.

Now my layout is even more maritime.

See the link below my signature.    (Port Elderley).
