Hi Guys and Gals, I have been asking questions about a new to me engine I am getting and was informed I should replace the battery with a BCR as not to fry the board in the engine. Well that made me think I should check the rest of my PS2 engines. I don't know alot about engines and there batteries so here are some photos of what I have. If any of them should be changed out please let me know. I don't want to FRY any of my engines!

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I'd replace the blue one, that's the old NiCad, and surely it's past it's useful life.  The green ones are newer, those should be OK.  Obviously, if you replace them all with supercaps, that would eliminate any possible battery issue.

Thanks John, So where do I get Supercaps and how much do they normally go for if you dont mind me asking?

Mike,

If you search for BCR on this forum, you will probably find enough posts to explain how to acquire what you need or even to build your own if you choose to go that route.  If I remember correctly, purchasing one from a LHS or a supplier will cost right around $20-$25.  Just note that PS1 and PS2 engines use a slightly different version of a BCR, but PS3 engines no longer require a battery.

You can buy the BCR (for PS1 and PS2 locos with the "9V" sized battery) and the BCR2  (for PS2 engines with the 3V heat shrink wrapped battery pack) from your local hobby shop or direct from the manufacturer J&W Electronics.  J&W has a volume deal, buy 7 get 1 free, buy 10 get 2 free (I think you can mix and match).  They do web and phone orders.    The original developer passed away, but some nice folks have taken over the business.
