I am currently making arrangements to redo my Penn Central 9850 Alco S-2 project with a new Lionel Legacy model. I chose the 38485 Southern model based on the fact that the chassis is already painted exactly like a Penn Central Alco S-2, except for the zebra-striped pilots. This means I do not have to go through the nightmare of taking the electronics out of the locomotive to perform a full repaint. My plan is to strip and repaint the shell, and to remove the zebra stripe pad printing with 91% alcohol on a Q-tip. Which paint should I use to match Lionel's paint on the chassis? I have heard that Weaver Scale Coat paints are used to match modern Lionel factory colors. Credit to Mike W for the following reference photos:
