I was hoping the Gold Edition would be different. There is just something about the heft and feel of metal. I have three heavyweight sets and I must say they are very very nice. (Blue Comet, Southern Crescent and SP Daylight.) I was thinking of two Gold Editions one for my son and one for me.   I may end up purchasing the gold for my son and possibly the black for me.

I would really appreciate if someone with a Lionel connection can clear up the unknowns surrounding the Gold edition.  It's a lot of money to spend for something we have never seen a picture or prototype.  It would be bad for Lionel to not clear this up and have a people order it only for it to be of a different finish than they had anticipated.

Have you contacted Lionel?  Seems like you have very specific questions only Lionel can answer.

I have to agree with Marty, These are questions only Lionel can answer. In the past the items were electroplated. This was the process MTH used to plate their items a few years ago, these processes are expensive. I am sure whatever process they use will be works of art.

Had the same question. I inquired to the powers that be, "What is the nature of the gold finish on the ‘scale PE’ trains on pages 16 and 17? Is it gold plate, as has been done in the past, or a gold paint with a clear coat? The catalog is not too specific and the illustration suggests gold paint."

The answer back is, as of two days ago:

"While the original intention was gold plating, we will be doing these engines as gold paint. We were not specific in the catalog because it hadn’t yet been determined."

Gold paint.

Bob

Interesting, I asked the same question about Gold Plating vs Gold Painting of Lionel today and got the following reply from customer service:

"When we introduce items in our catalog they are very often in the design phase. At that point a mock up sample or artist rendering will be depicted to show the concept offered. Until we have a sample of this product, we do not have more information at this time"

I also pre-ordered this thinking it would be Gold Plated, not Gold Painted. Looks like we will still have to wait and see.

I know what ever method Lionel uses to decorate these engines, they will be excellent.
