I have 5 Altas Geeps I'd like to 2 rail.  3 are GP9's from and early run.  2 are GP7's from a later run.  One dummy is 3 rail.  One dummy is a 2 rail model.  The rest are powered 3 rail models.

One route is the P&D 2201K Repower Kit.  I've noticed over the years that the preferred systems seem to be horizontal motor systems.  Has anyone converted an Atlas Geep this way?  I'm specifically asking about Atlas because I assume the chassis is different from Red Caboose.  I need to keep the Atlas chassis because of the paint.

Another route would be to buy dummy Atlas Geeps and use the 2 rail trucks, pilots, and railing.  Trucks being the most important.

I doubt that I will be using these to power anything more than a 30 car train.  Within the next year, I will probably go DCC.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a comparison of Atlas GP 35 two rail and Atlas GP35 three rail trucks. Two rail shows the wiper pickups v.s. the third rail pick-up.  You would have to compare part numbers to determine other differences.  Click on the underlined phrases to link.   Both units use vertical can motors.  Some of the Atlas offerings were two rail TMCC.

There are different side frames for the Atlas trucks. Example: Noted difference between and Atlas SW9 and SW1200 are the truck side frames.   Other differences may be noted.

Also Atlas SW models had a single motor drive design v.s. the two vertical can drive in most units.  Trucks are different.

I have a Atlas 2 rail Gold GP9 w/dcc that I want to convert to three rail scale. If one of your locos is TMCC then I would be happy to swap trucks and electronics with you. I just finished converting a SW9 and am very pleased with the results.

Bryan - Definitely, interested.  I am leaving to day to go on vacation.  email me (check my profile).  I have 2 Gold GP9's that are 3 rail.  Mine are Santa Fe, if yours are we could exchange chassis or whole engines.  Otherwise we can do it the hard way.

Regarding the thread, I solved most of my questions yesterday will post when I get back.
