I know this has to be in the archives, but my searches found nothing? Restoring a post war Lionel 675 and need to clean the engine shell. Lots of dirt and grease. Options I'm thinking of are warm water and Dawn with soft brush or same approach with 409. Any suggestions from people that really know how to do this best? Will of course remove the shell from the engine.

Try the Dawn first. 409 is fairly harsh stuff, and might affect the patina.
Postwar Lionel steam engine finishes are fairly tough. In my experience, using a soft toothbrush won't hurt them. Jusr be careful, and don't scrub around the number.
Done many times , warm water and mild dish washing soap will do nicely. I also use a toothbrush as they are small and get into any small spaces and crevices. Enjoy the project. ( every time I place a new toothbrush into service the old one goes to the train repair box)
After washing hit the shell with a coat of Wd40. Let it sit for an hour then buff off with a soft towel.
yup...I keep an old toothbrush, and the dish soap. and if you're in a winter climate...lay the shell on a register for a bit.
