dave, you should have some fan driven smoke units to blow smoke around inside the structures so it comes out vent holes and spaces. would be pretty cool.

Amazing rendition.
You're rockin' it, Dave!
George
Great stuff Dave.
Mike
Dave,
You captured the detail at the top of the furnace. It looks just like the ones at Bethlehem Steel. You can still see the furnaces when you go to the Sands Casino. In the halls of the casino, they have original drawings of some of the buildings and the blast furnaces on the walls.
Alan Graziano
Talk about great detail, nice job.
This is amazing me more and more.
Thanks Dave for the update!
Dave....I sure am enjoying this thread. I grew up in the Gary Indiana area, we lived in Portage, and this sure brings back memories of the huge U.S. Steel Gary Works complex....
Thanks,
Alan
Dave, It is looking GREAT!!!!!
You'll need a flag and blinking lights at the top as well.
Really great modeling! Here is a video shot recently of a Chinese steel mill in operation. from YouTube
Fred,
That is a great video!
Dave
Fred...thanks for the video. Really great!!
Alan
Dave..it should be in the carnegie museum in pitt.awesome..conrail
Thanks John. Happy belated birthday!
Dave, outstanding workmanship!! Going to have to stop by for a visit when time permits.
Jeff
Dave
once again you keep out doing yourself. Is this in your shop? If so, I need to take a road trip to Mercer Junction. But not until this cold weather eases.
Fred, WOW now that was really some GREAT shots. Thanks for posting the link to the video.
A little detail on the hoist. I dropped this right after taking the photo. It took a pretty good hit and still managed to stay mostly in tact.
Just unbelievable craftsmanship Dave! I so envy all the scratch builders on this site. I cannot imagine having a steady enough hand to do this sort of thing. I have a hard enough time just lining 2 wall at 90 degrees and that is with all the special clamps!
You all have a tremendous talent and vision! I tip my hat to each and every one of you!
Dave...beautiful!! Very creative way of using the MTH bridge base!!
Alan
I made some skip carts this weekend and thought I would try some rivet decals. Pretty cool product.
Dave
wow.....can't wait to see it up close!
The hoist is great! Whose stairs, rails and ladders are they...Plastruct?
I've been playing around with this little plasticville switch tower. It was a fun project and it fits pretty well in the limited space I have.
The hoist is great! Whose stairs, rails and ladders are they...Plastruct?
Stairs are Korber fire escape, ladders are platruct and railing is scratch built.
Dave
Super job, Dave. Looks awesome!
George
As another poster said, I don't know anything about your structure except that it looks great! Greasy, grimey, rusty buildings look great near railroads. Your scratch-built fits the bill. Congrats.
David,
Your details are just great. I could look at the pictures all day.
Alan Graziano
Dave, you are doing an incredible job on this project. Nice museum quality!
It just gets better and better, Dave!
Looks fantastic.
I agree with everyone! How tall is IT? What is your layout height?
Those skip carts... NICE!
The switch tower looks great there Dave.
Thanks for the update.
Looks great, really good attention to detail. I wish I had your talent.
Looks great, Dave!
Dave....it just keeps getting better and better! AND...you sure turned that Lionel switch tower into a masterpiece....WOW!!
Alan
I finished up the hoist house this weekend. I didn't go crazy on detail with this piece because it lives behind everything else.
Dave
The furnace is about 47" with top details. Table top is also about 47"
Dave
I think that hoist house is plenty detailed! I think the whole project is awe inspiring. It also looks like it is and will be very expensive. Is that true?
Dave, I agree, very cool! Malcolm
Stunning! 3 rails? I didn't see any 3rd rail!
Dave....this has been a great thread! You are a master craftsman...the pictures are fantastic
Alan
I've been fortunate enough to see Dave's not-so-little creation up close and personal. It IS awesome!
What he needs now, of course, is a row of about four or five of them so it will look like the furnace complexes I recall seeing at U.S. Steel and Youngstown Sheet & Tube back when I was a kid. Just kidding, amigo!
Dave, those last 3 photos from your phone are fantastic! I'd swear I was looking at the real thing. You definitely have talent. What are you going to do for an encore?
In O'gauge, an entire steel mill would be the entire basement and them some. Many were close to a mile long and that's about 110 feet in our favorite scale. In N gauge it may be doable. Just maybe. On my layout, a mile is around once and then about 15 feet more. At 39 feet it's just about as long as the average passenger station platform.
Fantastic pictures Dave. Brings back a lot of memories some good some bad. O well fantastic job and I hope to see it all some day.
Dave, I spent a little bit of my time in the Warren, Ohio mill at the blast furnace and you have nailed it!! Looks great
Jeff
I received a new caboose from Malcolm (brother love). I am fortunate to have two of his masterpieces on my layout.
I also started on the roofs for the furnace and cast house.
Dave
Dave,
The steel mill looks great!!! I like structures that dwarf the trains and this one does just that. I am glad you like the caboose.
Thanks, Malcolm
Dave,
Looking great, hopefully I can get over there for a visit soon. I will be done with my evening classes in mid June. Keep the pics coming!
Jeff
Dave, you may have mentioned this, but was is the foot print of the steel complex? How tall is it? It really looks wonderful!
Very impressive, Dave !
Looks great Dave very nice , good job !!! - Matt
Thanks to everybody for the nice comments.
Myles,
The furnace, with all of the top detail, is about 47" tall. The bench height is about the same. I'm not sure what the footprint is. The cast house and furnace housing have been very compressed. The furnace is scale.
Cost has been minimal. The I beams, stairs, ladders and trusses are Plastruct. Most everything else is just stuff I had laying around. Wood. paper, tile. TIG rod, PVC, spray foam, fibreglass etc.
Dave
Dave,,the whole project is really looking good..very nice,,,i showed my dad today and he said WOW !!! john
Very well done, Dave. The Brother-Love cabeese are the best! I'll be up soon.....wanna show you some of my Union RR stuff.
I finished the blower house this weekend. This structure would have housed giant air pumps for mill operations. My corner is running out of room so I did this as a flat. It is mostly masonite, plexi-glass and a little marble tile. The windows are Rusty Stumps.
Dave
Looking good, Dave!
George
Just read the whole thread. Your attention to detail is amazing! I wish I had the real-estate to even think about having something like this. You have done a masterful job! Well done!
Great work.....again!
Dave, It just gets better every time you post!
Dave; It looks fantastic. I'm assuming this is your home layout!
Looks great Dave !!!
Dave,
It looks fantastic from the construction to the weathering.
Alan Graziano
that is just a fantastic model. I lived in Pittsburgh too long to ever want to see a steel mill again, so you won't see one on my layout soon, but it's a really nice model.
I am in total agreement with Alan's assessment....David, you can come work on my layout anytime you want!!...
Alan
The blower house looks great! Good idea to do it as a flat.
Dave,
The facility has taken on an aura of reality rarely achieved on model railroads of any scale let alone O scale. Your railroad in that area does not look like a three rail model, it looks quite real. I would also like to compliment your photography. You captured the feeling as well as the detail.
Eliot
sick looking man
that's just beautiful.
I will note: the sky is to clear and blue to be that near a steel mill, but . . .
Now that is Pittsburgh, Braddock, Homestead, Clairton, McKeesport just to name a few! Fantastic job Dave!
Stack
I will note: the sky is to clear and blue to be that near a steel mill, but . . .
Actually, USW has been locked-out in a labor dispute that started several weeks ago. I believe I heard they are near agreement on a new deal, however.
Stack...may I add...Gary, Indiana too!!? Beautiful model Dave..
Alan
I started adding lighting to the mill. Some are incandescent but I've been using OGRE LEDs lately and really like them!
Dave
Wow that rules!
Looks great Dave!! Can you tell a little more about the LEDs that you are using...size, etc.??
Thanks,
Alan
Yes, please expand on the source of the LEDs and any components needed. Thanks in advance
Dave Looking Great! Very nice work.
Dave it is looking great !!! I like it !
Thanks guys!
The OGRE lights are made by Rick Baugh, who also happens to be a great modeler. You might know Rick from the Scenic Express booth at York.
These LEDs come 4 to a package and can run on AC or DC. A rectifier/resistor comes with the lights.
I'm sure Scenic Express will have these at York. You can also contact Rick via email or if you happen to be in Mercer, we have them at the shop.
Dave
Dave,
The whole mill scene sure looks great! The lights are just the ticket for an industrial building like yours. They remind me of what I saw in my years at power stations too. Lee has a point about the sky color, in the September 21st photos, but yesterday's photos look more grayish blue.
Great Job, are we running trains at your house soon?
My vote for scene of the year (decade?)
Scrappy
Rick posted somewhere in the Forum that he will be at the SE booth at York with his LED lamp products.
Thanks everyone for looking into Ogre LED Lighting. See you at the Scenic Express booth in the Orange Hall or "chip" buildings!
Rick's correct email address is: ricbau936@verizon.net
I got a chance to see these in person today when I stopped in to Patrick's Trains while traveling to York today. They are absolutely beautifully done!! While I have not had a chance to talk to Rick about their availability, it appears that several of our advertisers/sponsors will have then available. They are the perfect solution for a variety of lighting situations....you will be very happy with your purchase!!
Alan
sure this is correct it keeps bouncing back
Alan,
I had to apologize to Rick for not being able to read. it is .net
I also carry these lights at the shop and currently have then in stock.
Dave
Dave are the neeks on the lights bendable?
