Hello BxCarSun fans...well its a beautiful day here in central Texas, 60's, sunny and breezy.  So to celebrate, I am moving off of my usual presentation of "old" stuff for something celebrating TEXAS. 

Here is the Lionel 6-5258L Texas Special Milk Car...actually the convention car from the 2011 LCCA convention in Dallas.  Its a full scale refer (I can only run it on my outer 0-31 loop) and as such is about 11" long. 

I decided to show the end view because Lionel went all out on this beauty including roof walk overhang supports and end ladders plus piping. buffers to keep the milk from spilling and an uncoupler link.  It also has individually sprung trucks. 

Here she is being pulled by (what else!) the Lionel #210 Texas Special Alco AA from 1958,

OK folks...we need your BOX CAR SUNDAY input....So stop mowing the grass, stop planting petunia's, stop putting out the patio furniture and BRING OUT THE BOXCARS !   

I am posting another car from my "quest" to display the oldest boxcar I can find and for me this is a very recent acquisition . This type was available from when Lionel entered the O'gauge market in 1915. Now, I know that is at least 15  years too young to be the oldest boxcar around - some of you folks with European makes like Bing and Marklin can beat 1915 by over a decade.  However, for LIONEL this is his first "large" series cars in O' gauge, augmenting the smaller 4 wheel car (802 Box ) that was available in the same time period.  This is the Lionel 820 Box car.  Available as "Illinois Central" from 1915 to 1923 ( with a 1917-1918 ATSF that is so rare it almost does not exist !) and then replaced by this car, the "Union Pacific" from 1924-1926.  Alas in 1927 the 820 was replaced by the much more elaborate 814 outfitted with ladders, brass plates, and other trim.  All the 820 cars are really physically the same, except for the RR name and data that was just rubber stamped on the outside.  All had hook couplers (with one exception), 2 trucks, 2 sliding doors, and were painted an orange color (again except the 1 year ATSF) .  There was never any decoration except the black rubber stamped RR name or logo and technical data/car number.  So here she is...the Lionel 820, Union Pacific, from 1924-1926.  So 95 - 97 years young!

Note that very different from more modern cars, these cars do NOT say Lionel anywhere except on the bottom of the frame.  In fact until this version in 1924 they didn't even say "820". 

Here she is with her "replacement" the much larger and more elaborate 814.  The 814 is nearly 1" longer and 1/2 " wider and 1/2" higher, so the 814 is a considerably larger car and also is of more complex and robust construction.  The 814 was available from 1927 until the end of the pre-war period in 1942, although it did undergo some changes in trim. couplers, colors, and decoration over that period.

Wow, Don McErlean, you are the winner, and you have the oldies but goodies Award for the most unique box cars this fine Palm Sunday... Your history lesson is also entertaining and educational. I really like your MKT/Texas Special diesel and box  car from last Sunday, beautiful, and a lot Newer, (humor) Paul 2, your extra long box cars are really nice, and the Frisco car is awesome, neat ones, the cars I’ve chosen today, Army/Navy cars, are “made in america”, and it took a long time for them to arrive in Clarksville. Looks like the Pauls have some sort of psychic bond (twin sons of different mothers??? - extra credit if you get that ‘70’s reference ). I am continuing to try and organize all the trains in my basement and came upon this... when it came out, I intended to get two of them, not realizing how BIG they were. When I saw the size of the box, I was happy they only had one!!!

For reference, I placed one of the recent 60’ boxcars in front of the gigantisaurus...

And for further scale, that is one of the 21” Alaska passenger car in the background.

Finally, a fairly pedestrian (but quite attractive) boxcar...

Good Morning Boxcar Fans and Happy Easter. Some “Bunny” open the wrong door of this shipment of decorative eggs for the C.E.S. Warehouse.

Time to re-rail this boxcar!  

Blessed Easter Everyone !!   The Leonardtown and Savannah could not be left out of the Easter celebration and hence is operating the Easter Special Freight today.   

Here is the train, ready to move that freight so important to filling up Easter baskets.

Of course for "Boxcar Sunday" its the Lionel Hershey's plug door boxcar.  Loaded with Chocolate bunnies today !

The new Lionel George H.W. Bush 4141 boxcar arrived.  It's a beautiful car.

However, when I paired with my MTH Imperial SD70 George Bush 4141 the color differences are noticeable.  Not sure which is accurate...fortunately, it really doesn't matter to me.  I suspect though, it will to some.

👎🏽 With all due respect Ed,  MTH mudered the colors on this car'.. How difficult would it have been to match up the color with the loco.  Very poor quality control'...

Ha, just kidding Ed,  it looks pretty good to me.  I must say the layout is looking real good these days'... Now you have Bush and Trump...consists... Who will be next?....🐰

Ted, you're such a cynic!   Yes, Gentlemen, one is MTH and one is Lionel.  Should be a difference without a distinction, but, unfortunately that's not the case. It has  always mystified me why these guys can't get the colors right on models of real, current prototypes.  Why is it so hard?  In the 60's my brother restored a 1954 Corvette. To get the color right he gave a chip to our chemist cousin who analyzed it and gave him the formula...the restored Corvette color was 'showroom' identical. Why is it that model manufacturers can't get the color info from UP or whomever to assure the colors match and the prototype and thus each others...or is it simply the factories  use "Kentucky windage" on the colors.   But, nevertheless, so long as its reasonably close...I'm good with it.  These two pieces are beautiful in my eyes...

Ed, the manufactures don't realize the importance to the modeler that color and other details are correct. Especially in O Gauge'.  This is where HO lovers win as there stuff is very accurate'.......

Well here we are at Boxcar Sunday but we are a little light today.  My post represents a true "find" for me, you may know that I named my fictitious RR the "Leonardtown and Savannah" with a role of serving the port of Savannah.  By and large I thought that was more or less a product of my imagination.  NOW, amazing find and made by Lionel as well !!  This is the "Savannah Docks State Railway" boxcar from Lionel, circa 1998.  Candidly I never even knew it existed until a chance encounter on e-bay.  Just couldn't pass it up.  So, on the basis that there is a prototype for everything, here is Lionel's 6-16285 Savannah State Docks Railway boxcar from 1998.

Hard to believe that there actually was such a boxcar made by Lionel !  The neat thing is that in the "fine print" under the car data on the lower panel, just to the right of the door is the statement..."Leased from the Lionel Corporation" .  Well I just can't top this today!  Hope everyone has a good week.

Here is one of my favorites, recently acquired from my LHS:

It's a Lionel, has nice couplers, and I like the Lackawanna and D.L.&W. Railroads and markings and the colors.

Another one of my favorites is this classic Lionel Postwar B&O boxcar. The colors and design are very eye catching, IMO.

I don't know, but would like to know, if the colors, markings and general appearance of these boxcars are accurate when compared to the real thing. Arnold

Don McErlean, wow, that’s a great find, Savannah State Docks Railroad Lionel box car,  fits really nicely with your railroad theme, very nice colorful box car. SIRT, great weathering of this nice Rock Island box car, beautifully finished, a Wow., Biscuitag97 beautiful New Haven box cars, very colorful, some of my favorite color schemes, Today, I am showing an MTH model of a CSX Auto Transport box car, still new in the foam container. I’m going to really miss MTH. HAPPY RAILROADING EVERYONE.

Larry thanks for your comments on my new boxcar. I am fascinated by your auto transport car.  Did CSX really paint them up with that beautiful livery. Most of the auto transports we see here (BNSF and UP) are pretty plain.  

Arnold your “Timesaver” boxcar is pretty close to accurate they date from the late 40’s to the middle 50’s approximately when LCL and express business began to dry up on all the RR. Love the DL&W car that was local RR where I grew up but not sure about livestock schemes, north east not big cattle country.

It's getting to be that time of the year when ice cream is in demand.  This  car is an  authentic MTH salesman sample car.  Writing on the bottom of the car and on the box authenticate the car as being so.   I purchased the car new in the box and of course the car had never been run...... well at least until I bought it  This car has both model train historical significance ( I would think only very minor but only a 100 years from now will tell .... I better keep drinking my Geritol LOL!! ) and local significance in that Ellicott City, Maryland is the Howard County Seat which is the county in which I live.  I don't know if Ellicott & Sons was ever a real Ice Cream store or brand.  I had never seen it or heard of it until I saw this car.  I imagine that since Mike Wolf, Rich Foster, and Andy Edelman, who all grew up in Howard County, and of course MTH Electric Trains was/is based in Columbia, Howard County, Md. that one of those guys came up with the name for this car.  

On another historical note:  Ellicott City, Md. is the first railroad terminus in the United States.  The original station is located on Main St and is now a museum.  The station has survived many floods ( Ellicott City is prone to flooding as the Patapsco River runs through it among other factors. ) because it sits on a high elevation.   The first railroad station is Mt. Clair Station which is now part of the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore City.  B&O trains at one time ran the 13 miles between these two stations and the Ellicott City Station had a turntable for turning the locomotive.   Andrew Jackson was the first US president to ever ride a train and he boarded that train at this station in Ellicott City ( then named Ellicott Mills )   Today CSX owns the single mainline track that runs alongside the station ( the B&Os " Old Main Line.")   There are several CSX trains running through Ellicott City everyday.  

Lee thanks for the compliment on my Lionel boxcar.  It really was a fortunate find for me.  Trumptrain, that is one really cool boxcar.  The ice cream cones on it really are neat.  Here is one from our local area, in our region, "Blue Bell" is the premier ice cream maker.  Its nice to know that summer is coming after the absolute disaster of this winter in Texas.

In was a cold morning in 1949 when the photographer got a photo of an original painted Milwaukee Road XM boxcar, and one that was in such good shape.  This now 10 year old car was part of the first lot of 40' ribbed side boxcars, with a total of 10,540 ribbed side boxcars built before production ended earlier that year.  This car dwarfs the Pennsy X-29 and B&O M-26.  Next week we will take a closer look at that M-26.

The XM is Weaver, the others are Atlas.
