Several RK Double Door cars:

When they weren’t hauling potatoes they were used to move paper. So seeing how my plan is to do a fall themed layout, I’d model a couple cars that way. Still need to finish the project.

This is a really nice thread and now we are on page 62, lots of interesting pictures and beautiful layouts too. Happy Railroading Everyone

Here is a Weaver Chicago North Western.

                                              No need for 3 rails on a siding...

Model of New Haven 35238 has the letters CMP (Crown Model Products) on its underside. Data on this model of an XM steel boxcar says the prototype was built in 1948.

MELGAR

Here are two boxcars on the Midland Division of the NHRR.  Lots of traffic was moving on this bright, sunny afternoon in July, 1970.

GNW might be more of a holding company today but it started life to deliver salt from upper New York State mines.  This 40’ car started life as an AHM product, modified with Rustoleum auto primer and a top coat of Rustoleum Gloss white, satin.  Decals are older Champ, followed by a Dullcote.  Bettendorf trucks are Pecos River—consistent performance for an O scale waybill-driven operating railroad.  

BAR just added this 40’ XM to its roster, currently in a train heading from Maine to the Hartford Courant,  passing through the yard just north of the city.  AHM made the original mold for the car, later used by Lionel for its 70’s venture into the scale-like  cars.  Paint was Rustoleum, overcoated with Dullcote.  Decals are by Champ but I believe are available elsewhere.  Since the car is new, no weathering  as yet…

I'm probably slow Mark......but I don't recall that locomotive on your layout.   Nice looking locomotive and consist.   Great lighting for the display.

Back in the day when Calvin "cool" Coolidge was the 30th and Alfred E. was a wee lad, A. E. Neuman decided to advertise his future ambitions on a "Pennsy" double-sheathed boxcar.

Well Dallas, I have 4 PS1 Railking steamers bought them some time ago for the smoke and pulling power, Thank You Sir!

Running a bit late today….

Two MTH factory painted cars that I modified. I added brake platforms and more scale brake wheels, stems and some grab irons. Also gave the truss rods some turn buckles.

No weathering, just a coat of Tamiya flat finish. I may weather them later on…

CM&StP ….Don't mind the brake stem. It’s straight now…

A DMIR boxcar. This one arrived with broken trucks. They do have a mild zinc pest issue, apparently. This was only the second car out of 100 plus I have purchased, that had truck issues. I was able to swap out the broken side frames and couplers with some spare parts. The coupler/truck bolsters from regular roller bearing Bettendorf MTH trucks fit in the archbar truck frames, so I was able to assemble two good trucks from parts. The repaired couplers will go on a cattle car project…

Some of you may recall that I am trying to assemble a "Chessie" system train to go with my Lionel 8008 Chessie locomotive.  Well I managed to connect on e-bay with another Chessie car.  This one a Lionel #9740 Chessie box car in yellow from 1974-75.  I had previously found the Chessie box car # 16232 in blue from much later, 1992.   So here is my "new" Chessie box car found in the box and "only" a mere 49 years old!

Not one of my regular lines, but you gotta love the Chessie logo. Do you have any Chessie Std O??? I have a few Chessie Std O hoppers and I’d gladly donate one to your Chessie train. I’m bouncing around between my house and my brother’s over in NY, so it may be a few weeks before I can send one, but if you’re interested, send me an email (address in my profile) and I’ll be happy to ship one off when I get a chance.

I can't remember if I've contributed to this thread or not so forgive me if these are reposts.  I have several hundred boxcars in my collection, but most remain unphotographed.

For the CBQ an older all cast metal Walther's kits wood sheathed double door boxcar and a modern K-Line composite boxcar painted for the Friendship Train which has a really fascinating history and lots of great lessons on civics.

A few CNJ boxcars.  The first is an All-Nation / Athearn kit heavily weathered followed by a Weaver PS-1 painted for express service.  The caboose is a modified MTH NE style.

More what I believe to be All-Nation / Athearn kits.  I did not build or paint these, but I suspect the first one is a fantasy car and meant to try an represent an all-door boxcar.  I believe it should be a double door Pullman PS-1 like the Cotton Belt one below it.  The cabin is a Walthers kit for anyone who is interested.

Finally, a video I've posted before of an AB ATSF FT set laboring upgrade on the Paradise and Pacific layout in Scottsdale.  Lots of boxcars on this one including MTH, Lionel, Weaver, Atlas, K-Line, and Athearn.

Love the six Friendship cars Lionel did a couple of years ago… really enjoyed digging into the history of the train - even found a short video of a GG1 pulling some of the cars to NYC. Hope they make some additional cars!!!

Thanks for sharing the additional cars.  I did not know Lionel also made these.  I'd like to find the cars I do not have.

Not that I’m trying to be a bad influence (I really don’t need to try )… Nicholas Smith still shows the 6 Lionel boxcars (and the 2 18” passenger cars) in stock. The boxcars are nicely made with sharp graphics and the price looks good too!!!

I have all the Lionel, MTH, and K-Line Friendship Train cars (except duplicates), plus making some of my own based on photos.  Makes a nice train and several different engines pulled the different trains while on their home trackage (I think there were three different trains, maybe more).  I pull mine with my PRR Centipede, which pulled the train on PRR trackage mostly in PA.

One comment on the Lionel cars.  They all have the "terrible trucks" and need to be replaced.

Still my favorite Boxcar!

Here are 3 versions of the Burlington Green & Yellow. The first is a Weaver, the second 2 are MTH. Forum Sponsor Berwyn's Trains did a custom run of two 40 footers that I have on my purchase list. K-Line also did a toy size that was nicely detailed.

I received a commission from a friend to create an "awareness" boxcar dealing with this devastating human condition.

Lionel 6-51401 PRR Boxcar, Richard Kughn’s LTI repro of the boxcar from the prewar semiscale set. Very heavy (1.5lbs) due to phenolic body. Really like the functioning door latch. The six car LTI repro set makes for a very heavy train! Recently got the entire six car set from a fellow forumite, at a very reasonable price.

Spokane Portland & Seattle XM boxcar #11091 is a K-Line product (K761-M001). It's been on my railroads for many years. The placard says it was built in January 1945.

I’ve posted boxcars in the past, randomly…
Today’s boxcar theme is “home road” cars on my New Haven RR.  

This 50 foot NewHaven and Railroad Boxcar is being dropped at the Plainfield interchange track. The car is a re-painted Pecos River Brass 50’ car, with Rustoleum primer and Scalecoat II finish coat. Decals are old Walthers, with Solvaset and a Dullcote overspray.  
The incidental caboose is an older Weaver product with plated over windows, making it more reflective of a NewHaven caboose of the era. Again Scalecoat II is sprayed on over a coat of Rustoleum primer.  Decals are MicroScale.

Here we have a NewHave Railroad, 40 foot Boxcar originally produced by Intermountain. The car was painted using Rustoleum auto primer and Scalecoat Ii paint. The New Haven decals are by Champ.  The Connecticut society of Ferroequinologists decals were custom run to celebrate the 50th anniversary our Oscale modular club. The were designed by good friend and forum member Bruce Clouette.

The last car is a Weaver AAR 40 foot box car, in the Waterbury yard, destined for Maybrook. The original car was produced with boxcar red doors, which are incorrect for the “as delivered” paint scheme. It was a pretty simple change to overspray the doors with a flat, black paint, leaving the rest of the car in original paint and lettering. It’s good to have an easy one once in a while!!

Not sure but my captions didn't come thru. I used the Tucker sign from one of the displays that they came in. I also like the Burlington Route auto boxcar for the project. The Russel's Dairy reefer was one of several custom cars we did for the Museum. The artwork came off an actual milk bottle from the small dairy in North Freedom, WI.

Hello BxCrSun fans...here we are on a nice cool spring day in central Texas, just 58 degrees but sunny.  Today I have a " late bloomer" from the Lionel tinplate era.  The 655 boxcar but in the configuration from 1941 with 1940 issue couplers ( simulated knuckle on the box).  This is the "rubber stamped" version of this car, as Lionel sought to create rolling stock that was more realistic than toy like.  Who could have known in the early part of 1941 what would happen later that year and that by 1942 all toy production would be stopped.  So in one sense, here you have the last gasp of classic Lionel tinplate rolling stock.

Here is a photo of my North Stratford Railway Company boxcar I customed painted with decals from K-4 Decals.  The boxcar is MTH Premier car.  I really like the logo with the State of New Hampshire and the long gone "Old Man of the Mountain" which goes well with my New England themed layout.

Cribari, I like your billboard reefers, so colorful, and reading your profile on the forum, I’m honored to know you via OGR, now I see why you start the interesting threads, Wow, @Don McErlean, Oh, I love those Lionel 655 yellow box cars, really nice, and prayers for you and your wife are still in our thoughts and minds, it’s a cool 49 degrees here in my area, great to spend time with the trains, @Jeff B Haertlein, Wow, nice auto carrier cars and cool automobiles, and in have a neat layout, Wow, @franktrain, Wow, those are cool explosive cars, very colorful, and your layout looks interesting, this interesting thread just keeps getting better each week. I purchased this New Haven car from a forum member, it’s MTH and it’s a nice car. Happy Railroading Everyone
