I've been working on my 30-1133-1 MTH Railking Commodore Vanderbilt. I had it on test rollers and while testing the electric uncoupler a silver rod & spring shot out of the coupler when it opened. Not sure if anything else came out but that is all I could find.
Can it be repaired? MTH has them in stock but I didn't know if this was a common issue and they could be put back together or better to just replace?

You need the knuckle and you can get them. The design is essentially unchanged since 1945 when Lionel came out with the coil coupler and the Post War parts guys have these but then a replacement is about 10 bucks so how much is your time worth? If you decide on a repair then best get a new rivet too. Not worth trying to save those.

I Thanks for the advice. Even though I'm retired my time is still worth so I went ahead and ordered two from MTH for $12.
Then of course while I was going through my O gauge parts bin I found a brand new QSI by MTH coupler that fit. Now I'll have some spares.

If the knuckle rotated all the way out, there's a reasonable chance that the actual coupler body is bad and doesn't capture the knuckle.
I did manage to get it back together and latched. Hit the open coupler button and everything went flying again. That's now in the trash can. Good to know that it is probably the coupler body, not just the knuckle.

A dab of epoxy at the lever end might fix the problem. It is flying out because the lever is not hitting the coupler body. If you try this the rivet still has to come out to install the knuckle inside the body.

MTH parts has the part for $12 plus shipping. As GRJ said, the coupler body is likely damaged so the chances of fixing it are slim.
I also have a problem with a MTH Electro coupler on a 2-8-8-2 Yellowstone rear coupler. The sound say's it fired, but it does not open. Can I repair it or does it need to be replaced?
The chances of fixing these is slim to none, & Slim went to lunch, ….these aren’t bank breaker parts to buy. Get some traction tires, and few extra couplers to have on hand to make the order wort while for the shipping, and stock up.
