Hello I have some older trains and now an mth engine that I run conventional power. Can the Lionel handheld be used to do this?

You do have to add equipment between your transformer and the track to control the voltage.
A TMCC Cab1 and the Powermaster PM1 work together to control conventional trains. There is a Legacy Cab1 for about twice as much but if you only want to control conventional no point in spending the extra money. Both these pieces will work with your old transformer. You can pick up the Cab1 and the PM1 on eBay for less than $100. j
