Has anybody changed MTH premier passenger trucks to 2 rail?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
I have. It was on one of the Premier old time passenger cars. I just used factory MTH 2 rail trucks. Easy replacement however this was years ago when they were easy to find. There may be different ways of doing it these days. I have a bunch of MTH equipment I would like to convert but I can’t get the trucks.
Not the passenger equipment, but I've converted several MTH freight cars.
A simple swap to 2 rail passenger trucks may take forever, finding the 2 rail trucks. For my conversions I removed a wheelset, measured it's length, and either used sets I had on hand that matched or ordered appropriate NWSL wheelsets. Or used Intermountain wheelsets in the rare case they fit.
In my cases I also had to modify the truck and/or body bolsters to achieve the correct ride height. Something you may have to deal with from a 3 rail model. One example was the MTH model of the PRR R50b reefer. It required moving the bolster mount below the sideframe lugs from the OEM top position. In order to get the proper ride height.
The only MTH passenger cars that I converted were the 64' woodside ones. I used MTH two-rail trucks; I did have to remove the long piece that the three-rail couplers were on and then mounted KD couplers to the body.
Thanks for the replies I have access to a few Mth replacement trucks but theses are streamline cars and the replacements are black so I guess I will just paint them silver and call it good
I echo what was said above- I’ve done it and used MTH replacement trucks. If you need more, both Mainline Hobby in Blue Ridge Summit, PA and Iron Horse Trains in Hanover, PA have them in stock. Both stores ship.
