Chuff and sound issue

I would think tender electrical issue because no markers either.  Try unseating plugs and reseating in tender on boards.  Chuff might be a chuff switch issue.  G

Look at the engine for broken wires in the area where the engine and tender plug together.

I don't believe there is a mechanical chuff switch in that model, it doesn't show up in the parts list.  I'd be looking for wiring issues as previously stated.

I did disconnect/reconnect connections in the tender but nothing helped. I didn't want to open engine if not needed. 

John, I didn't see a switch in lionel parts break down. but if the smoke unit pulses correctly should that relate to the pulse signal for chuff is present or working. I assume it is the same electrical signal used for chuff and smoke?

Yes, the same signal triggers the smoke as the sound, it is generated by the RCMC from the tach encoder input.

Your issue screams out wiring between the locomotive and tender, but obviously this is just one person's opinion.  I know that I'd start at the tether and it's connectors in trying to solve this issue.

Finally got a chance to look at the issue again. Continuity of tether checked out fine. Disconnected and reconnected everything at least twice.  So I swapped out the sound board and the chuff sounds worked fine again. Didn't check out reverse lights.  At this point I think I may swap out the sound board. 

My question... do sound boards go bad like this and are the backup lights controlled through the sound board. Or is that totally unrelated? 

I should have just sent it in to service but it's getting late to have it back for Christmas.
