I just buy the coupler with base when the grandkids mess them up - I include them in my Lionel order list, which I grow until it is enough for the flat shipping fee or I need something now.

Edit: added link to Series 1 parts - Series 2 coupler may be different - I get the series 1 for the early set of the Remote Thomas

There has been a 50% parts sale online that coincides with the Open House in November.

Even if you do cut and grind, Lionel doesn't sell a similar spring? Do you have source for that spring?

Yes, Lionel does list the spring as part no. 6208250493, and the price is only $0.30 ea. It's just that the work/benefit ratio is pretty high considering the replacement of a small coupler rivet, plus 4 screws, then losing the knuckle spring somewhere along the way...., etc. I was hoping someone had done a few of these and had a quick n dirty short cut

Thanks for your response, as always I learned something new! I did not know there was a 1 (old) and a 2 (new), I was simply looking at the parts list here and failed to even notice that it was a "Christmas" car. I also failed to notice the entire coupler assy was available on that page as well - guess I was just focused on finding that spring.

I think I'll take your suggestion and buy the whole coupler assy, very quick n easy! And maybe a couple of cheap springs too, in case I run out of projects one night .... like that will ever happen!

Thanks, Moonman

Sorry,

I hadn't repaired one lately. I believe when the coupler screw is removed the spring sits over a collar and the ends against the base plate screw mount support collars.

If yours is riveted, it must be a very early set. The Christmas sets do have unique body parts. The newer versions fit.

I just checked some new spares I have on hand. The couplers have a c-clip holding the pin for the coupler to the base plate. It's not a rivet.
