Conventional Remote?? for lack of a better name.

Hello All…

After watching the Legacy Meeting “LUG” and hearing first hand where the O gauge hobby is headed I had to ask myself if that’s what I want.??
I love Remote Control Trains, and a slick Remote to control them. Another nice feature is a Remote Switch Control, although I enjoy throwing the switch that comes with the turnout…conventional control?
The new sensor track sounds cool and I will enjoy all that it has to offer as long as it’s talking to my Legacy Remote. I don’ think I’ll ever use a computer/phone to interface with my Trains..,…not that there is anything wrong with that!
I have to admit it is exciting watching the Hobby Evolve. I guess I’m a Conventional Remote kind of guy. How about you ? Are you going to run out and buy an Apple- or maybe you already own one?

When I got my Williams/Samhongsa brass USRA 2-8-2 and my Weaver brass G5 4-6-0 chassis (put a modified MTH 2-8-0 boiler on it) I pulled the conventional electronics out of them, keeping just the DC can motors so I could install PS2.

One day I hooked up my old Aristo-Craft Train Engineer (an HO set) with handheld remote to the inside & outside rails and ran the engines for quite a while. I only ran one at a time, but it ran fine.

If one did not care about the sound it would be very easy to run 3-rail O scale using what's available when powering 2-rail.

I eventually installed PS2 in both engines, but if I ever have a failure I know I can gut them and continue running trains.

There's a couple of folks on the forum that do run using a simple DC setup, hopefully they'll chime in.

I agree with you about conventional. I run legacy tmcc dcs and I always enjoy conventional as well. It's a nice feeling moving the lever on the transformer and slowly move the throttle and watch the train slowly move up to speed. Remotes are cool but they do not have the feel of a transformer throttle. Also using a phone or iPad even more defeats that feeling plus the iPad is way to big. I'm not knocking remote operations but each does have its plus and minuses.

I think Lionel could make a LionChief Transformer. It could railse and lower voltage at the transformer itself. Then any conventional train can have a "clicker". And one does not have to go buy TMCC/L products to do it, kike I am now!

With the IR sensor track set to launch I just hope you will not need an I-Pad to exploit all the features of a track sensor equipped layout or sensor equipped Engine. Lets hope the hand held is up to the task and nothing else is needed except a piece of track.
