I successfully installed crossing gates today. They are MTH and I used Z Stuff sensors. I used the full length of wire provided but they're too close to the crossing; By the time the arm on the crossing comes down the train is already into the crossing itself.

 

My question is: How do you determine how far away from the crossing do you locate your sensors? Run the engines and cars and continue moving the sensors farther away until it's on the mark or do you use a standard distance?

It's difficult at best, to reach an ideal spot. I'm using isolated rails and that's what I did. It also depends on train speed, slower you can put them closer, faster means further away. Unless someone knows a better way?

There's a better way, but it doesn't use the controllers that Terry is using.  For one-way train traffic, it involves a simple method using relays. You use a relay to start the signal sequence, a relay to hold the gate down during the time that the train is crossing the road, and a third relay to release the gate when the last car clears the roadway.

 

For two-way train travel, it uses 9 relays. But I'm sure that one or more of the firms who make electronic signal controllers, such as NJ International, Dallee, or Custom Signals, can offer you a circuit board that emulates the real thing more accurately.

 

I use relays because I'm an old telephone man and I like using them.

How are you energizing all the relays?
