I'm going to be getting a MTH PS1 SD70MAC (20-2224-1) that has a bad PS1 board, instead of adding PS3, I think I'm going to do something different. In the spirit of Bruk upgrading his AC9 to legacy control, I want to do it to this engine and add a couple of extra features too. I want to add spinning roof fans (like on the 6-28307 Trainmaster) And add the smoke effects like on the 6-28306 Hybird. I understand that this is a very involved project but I really want to do it. I've made a parts list of what I think I need to get the engine running with the legacy system, sound and the other features (minus spinning fans) are added too (I think). Any precautions/things I need to add is much help as I've never done anything like this before, but the only way I'll learn is by doing it. Thanks for the help.

Lionel does sell an SD-70 with the newer and much better RCMC board system.  You would do better for yourself to buy one and have it painted.  No chasing parts and no problems.   FYI, Bruk is a high end repair tech and can come up with all wiring harness and other parts needed.   Just my take as I have been inside a few engines.

Yep George, you can buy some RS6 boards and the other stuff on his list without turn-in parts now.

Pretty sure everything on my list I can just buy. I think I'm going to take advantage of the parts sale soon. Curious on the motors for the engine though, do I need new ones or can I just add the motor sensor board? If I can just add the board, how do I take the flywheel off to put it in?

I would just buy the Lionel one but there's two issues with that. The first is I want to practice working with Lionel electronics and not have to "pull teeth" to get them. Secondly the SD70 I'm getting is a PS1 unit in need of an upgrade, instead of turning it into a PS3, I'm going to try the legacy route, new to me since I've never done an upgrade of any kind before. One more thing, I want to make it an engine that no one else has by cherry picking features from other engines and adding them to the engine I'm working on.

Looks like everything. You'll need wire harnesses for all that too. The radiator fans do not run all the time and it is dependent on engine run and labor I believe so this may or may not work as the radiator control might be part of th RS code on the   RS board and using the GE 4 stroke diesel sounds aren't even close to the EMD turbo 2 stroke sounds. If have a few of these engines and if I wasn't so busy I'd crack one open and tell you where the ram motors plug in but my basement looks like a toy train factory blew up down there so I'd better finish something's before I go breaking more.

I'll try and see if it works when I get to that point. Just wanted to make sure I had everything. Does lionel sell wire harnesses or do I need to make my own? If so I can get the plugs and wires from digikey.
