What does the letter [M] mean when displayed? How did it get turned on & how is it extinguished? I have two Handhelds and only one of them display this character. The other has a normal display.

The "M" indicates that the External Microphone has been turned on (whether you have one or not is irrelevant to DCS. 
)
To turn it off: Menu/Sound/External Mic and press soft key "OFF"
