Those of you you have thr prewar Flyer 43226 - do you run it or just display it? A repairman suggested to me that it would be best just to display mine. I suppose that's because of its rarity and this model's propensity for the zinc pest problem. Mine is OK as far as I know.

I ran mine a few times after getting it from eBay. I even modified a Lionel tender to run behind it.
The problem was that the drive wheels slipped on the axles and it lost quartering. I still haven't been able to figure out how to fix that. I've had no luck with CA glue.
It was made to run and enjoy and if it runs enjoy it! To me when a train just sits on a shelf the only thing your collecting is dust!
Do not know about that particular engine but the normal rutine is as such. Remove wheels and knural axials, then replace and quarter wheels. The trouble is on most old engines the wheel castings will not withstand the process. Second option is to find replacement wheels and press them on, this works if you can find replacement wheels and don't mind loosing the originals. Final option, put it on the shelf and admire.

RoyBoy, if you can figure out the quartering, here's an old, quick and effective remedy for loose drive wheels: Take a pair of diagonal cutting type plyers and run the cutting edge around spirally on the axles where the wheels go. Then simply press the wheels back on. I would push only on the centers as much as possible.
I have also reattached a wheel with that old reliable, JB Weld.
This model is impressive and fun to see run, with all its side rods, and I hope you can get it back in action.
