I have recently purchased a lionel Legacy UP FEF-3 steam locomotive. Beautiful engine, runs fine, but when i run it through my 072 switch, it shorts the power every time. Going through straight, it is fine, but actual switching to the other loop causes the short barely halfway through. None of my other engines have any problems, i have articulted engines that go through with no problems. Can someone suggest a way i can troubleshoot this issue? When i look at the loco where it stops on the switch, it does not seemed to have derailed, i can actually push it through as it is. Thanks for any advice anyone has

I believe that locomotive has blind drivers on the center drive wheels. A common issue is they hang out enough that they'll touch the center rail. I hae all Ross switches, and I've had to adjust several for this issue.
What is the 072 switch - lionel 022, lionel fastrack, Ross, etc.
I had a problem with a lionel Big Boy going through a Ross 072 switch. My post on the subject and my fix may be of help.
The brand and model number of switch is important too - one of those don't ask me how I know.
Fastrack 072 i am not sure of the model number as i am not at home right now
I had troubles such as you described and used my iPhone on slo-mo video. It took a pretty good shot of the center roller shorting and I was able to fix where it was causing the problem. I've had other times where burn marks made the location of the trouble evident, too...LOL. Good luck!

I too have had this issue, as a fast test put a small piece of electrical tape on the center rail, if it goes away I 3M tape to fix the isuue.
Check the center pickup where the engine stops too. It could be touching the outside rail. Look for scars on the roller or switch as mentioned above too.
I've corrected this issue by painting the offending rails with clear polyurethane. Works like a charm.
Thanks to everyone for their help and input. I was trouble shooting today with the engine and track trying to see where it was touching the outside rail, causing the short. It seems that it was a very simple issue I should have caught right away. I picked up the engine and saw that the front pick-up roller was loose and not aligned correctly in the center of the engine. I picked up a screw driver and tightened it, Problem Solved! Thank you again for all your help, I just need to start openings my eyes a little more and see what is going on.
