Andrew,

All modern train equipment (engines, accessories, and remotes) come with a manual.  If you do not have the manual, go to Lionel's website and download them for free.  While you are there, watch their YouTube Videos on how to operate the equipment.  They have made it easy to learn. It is much easier and faster teach yourself than asking these questions here first.  Also, if you have a local hobby shop that sells trains, stop in and ask them for help.

I agree 100% about reading the manuals and accessing the information in form of paper, electronic media, and videos.

But I tend to disagree about getting questions answered here. The forum is a great place to get additional information and some nitty gritty questions answered or drawing on the experience of those here.  I would expect before someone starts asking questions they've at least gone through the manual.

You're right Marty. This forum is a great place to ask any question and  I did not intend my comment to sound otherwise.  I did edit it, and I just wanted to stress the very available resources from Lionel that make it hard to fail with Legacy.

Roger that!

Look up RTFM at Wikipedia, it will answer those and many other questions

I will say that I thought something was wrong after trying to add command switches to the layout.  I read the manual.  The last step said to press "set".  On the backlit display, I saw the word set was there with a button below that lined up.  I kept redoing the steps and pressing that "set" button and nothing happened.  I finally decided to use the "set" button under the velocity dial and that worked.  Oh well.
