Hi Folks,

 

We have just announced a new line of 17" Plastic Passenger cars, using a Harriman C-60-5 Coach as our base model.

 

We know our customers really like to have a full train right out of the box, so we are producing 5 different cars as a Set. Add an extra Coach, and that makes 6 cars. More coaches are available, as there were many used in commuter service.

 

We haven't make our final decisions about tooling, but we would like to produce all 5 different cars using the same length tool, 17". This is totally correct and perfectly scale for the 60' Coach, Lunch Car and Business / Observation Car. If we take some liberty with the Baggage and RPO, we can produce the 70' version of these, and shorten them just a bit (.5 - .7"), to fit the mold. We don't think it would take away the beauty of this set.

 

We are using the latest technology in these cars. The Coach, Lunch and Observation car will have Flicker Free LED overhead lighting. Full interior detail with 6 figures in each car. All windows will be flush mounted. There will be generous underbody detail and flexible diaphrams for close coupling. Since these cars are only 17" long, we will design them for 042 track or larger radius. Great behind any of your SP, UP Steam, we are making these same cars available in many different liveries.

It's in the reservation form and comes out at about $169.00 per car. That's what I think is the going rate for O scale ABS passenger cars with interiors. But GGD's offerings will always excel the the other manufacturers'.

I'm not sure that the Pullman Company ever had any of these "Harriman Style" passenger cars. This would call for some research, right?

Good point. Looking for a set in Pullman Green colors is my main goal.

Sunset/3rd Rail has already done the SP P9/P10 Pacifies, which are ideal for these cars, especially if you model the late 1940s through the mid 1950s Southern Pacific commute service. After that, these cars will also look fantastic behind SP GP9s, SD9s, and FM Train Masters.

I'm sure if you reserve a set for "SOUTHERN PACIFIC LINES", Scott will be happy to provied that styling, given enough reservations. 

 

I have on of the Sunset/3rd Rail brass Harriman coaches in the "LINES" lettering, that I use on the rearend of a long PFE reefer train, which is how the SP did things on the coast route, through the early 1950s.

Hot is correct - there were no Harriman Pullmans.  SP, at least, would stick a pair of Pullmans at the rear of heavyweight passenger trains.  With air conditioning ducts, the Pullmans almost matched the Harrimans.

 

but I bet Scott would paint "Pullman" on them if enough orders show up. I am kind of hoping he uses a PSC car to get the correct roof contour.

 

Scott probably forgot to say - most Harriman coaches do scale outto between 16 and 17", although the diner iscloser to 19 1/2".  That means Hi Railerscan have scale length passenger cars - no compromises.

 

So far, the P-5 Pacific has not been made in O Scale, to my knowledge.

 

Yes.  In 1950 I rode the Daily Argonaut from Benson to New Orleans.  It was mostly Harriman baggage and coach, but the last two cars were heavyweight Pullmans - Lake Elizabeth and Clover Acres.  Itarrived in Benson with an MT on front, left Lordsburg with a rectangular tender cab forward, and made it over the Huey Long bridge with a set of Alco passenger units.

 

In later years you could see F-units pulling Harrimans.  They lasted in SFO commute service until the 1980s.

 

Here is a Pullman analogy, for what it is worth.  Consider the PRR P70 coach series - they never lettered them Pullman.  But PRR did have Pullman heavyweights in the same train with the P70s.  Same thing with Harrimans.

Myself, I'm ordering UP two tone grey!  Of course, a few extra cars will be part of the order

One thing I've learned about GGD-you better act fast or you'll be out of luck!
HOLY SMOKES SCOTT! Count me in for a set + add on of UP TTG with white/silver stripes.

Now if you just made a UP or UP/OSL Class P8/P9 or P10 4-6-2 with matching a TTG White/Silver scheme then I'll have died and gone to O gauge heaven!

I've just ordered my UP TTG set and 2 add on coaches.  Scott Mann, this is my first order from you.   You put yourself out there and pay attention to what people are asking for.  You actively solicit feedback and you listen to what your consumers have to say........you have listened and you have delivered.  I'm certain many others would say something similar. I nearly fell over when I saw exactly what I've been looking for in passenger cars. However, I wasn't surprised that it came from your company.  You got my business.  Thanks.

Pullman never had/operated coaches.   Pullman's main business was higher class.   they ran all sorts of sleepers and they ran diners and lounges and obs that had lounges or bedrooms.

 

Many RR had passenger equipment including coaches painted a dark green (ie Pullman green).    So I think the green is very prototypical depending on RR (not pennsy of course).   But the Pullman lettering should only be first class cars.

 

Many trains carried both coaches and pullmans.    Only a very few trains such as the Broadway Limited and 20th Century in the east were all pullman.    I think the Santa Fe Super Chief may have been too.   

 

When both coaches were present, generally (there are always exceptions) the coaches came after head end equipment, then the diner, then the pullmans.    the diner basically separated the second class coach passenger from the first class pullman passengers and the conductors would gently enforce the rule keeping coach passengers from the first class areas.

So, Lionel enters the 85 foot passenger car market typically dominated by GGD and GGD enters the shorter passenger car market that has been the stronghold of MTH, Atlas, and Lionel. Interesting.

 

Over the years a lot of eastern road modelers have requested "commuter" coaches.

Have you noticed that many eastern roads (Erie, Lackawanna, Reading, etc) will be available in pullman green and these should certainly fill a niche in that market.

I think offering shorter passenger cars is a great idea as most of us don't have the room for a layout that can accommodate wider radius curves and full scale equipment.  Which is why my passenger fleet is MTH--they achieved a good compromise between scale and semi-scale with their 18" offerings.

What I would very much like to see are 18" versions of the Pullman-Bradley "American Flyer" cars.  I know Weaver has offered full scale 21" versions of these beauties, but again, too long for my layout, so I have to regretfully pass on them.

As I mentioned above, Sunset/3rd Rail has already produced the Southern Pacific "P8/P9/P10 Class" Pacific models some years ago, equipped with EOB by Train America Studios with TMCC. The show up on "the Bay" fairly often. And yes, the 2472 was produced.

Yes, they could have been.

"Could have been?"  It was a very rare heavyweight passenger train where all cars were the same length.  Even some Budd streamliners had shorter baggage cars.  A lot of modelers prefer equal length cars, which is probably why sets are sold in matching lengths.

 

I had an SP friend who insisted that all box and refrigerator cars be the same height.  He was well aware that that never happened in real life - he just liked it that way.
