I think 1mm is too thick. Clover House sells 0.0006 glass. That's the best option if you ask me. A simple scribe does the trick. Dan at The O Scale Resource did a great article about working with glass. A word of advice, there is not such thing as too many precautions when working with glass!

You don't want to use microscope slide glass, rather microscope cover slips which are considerably thinner. Its made with real glass as well as optically clear plastic. Obviously plastic is easier to work with. You can get either on ebay as well as other sources. I have used both. Unless this is to be entered in a national model contest I would go with the plastic.
