Going to buy some big steam...opinions requested

Obviously a nice selection of potential engine purchases but have you given some thought as to track radii required to operate some of these larger engines. You might also want to consider how they're going to look while actually operating on your layout. Excessive engine overhang on tighter track curves doesn't look good - especially with those larger articulated engines. As an example the B&O Yellowstone (EM-1) and VL Challenger in particular will require larger track radius than either the USRA Mallet or PRR J1. I think you would agree that selecting the 'right' engine has more to do with individual layout design and operation than engine size or specific railroad. 

Hi Ron all of these Lionel engine's have awesome sound

and features. I have the PRR J1A the sound is incredible

I've heard the mallets in person and also incredible.

The detail on these engine's are beautiful. The J1A tender is awesome.

I have a decent sized layout (9 x 16). I plan on running one of these monsters on the upper level that is now under construction. 0-99 on one side, 0-81 on the other. I must confess that I am a loop runner with only a few switches. I just like watching them go 'round. If I ever run it on the lower two loops, they are 0-72 and 0-81.

Alex, that J1 is sweet looking. I have been in love with the J1 since 3rd Rail came out with their version in the late 90's. The tender really makes that one.

The VL Challenger may be hard to find at this point. I want the UP Black version.

The EM-1 has a different look than most other articulated steamers. It has a utilitarian beauty to it.

The USRA is an ugly workhorse. An that's why I like it.

I vote for the J-1  Haven't run my yet because it is being weathered but it is a beauty

All are fine locomotives - I have all of them although not necessarily the roadnames you listed (I don't have the same tender shell as on the PRR J1, etc.).

The Challenger is the best of the lot by a slim margin but will cost a bit more.  All have really good sound and I am very happy with all four.  The Mallet is not that big for an articulated - about the size of the 2-10-4 in fact - they are both noticeably smaller than the other two - important if you really want "big."

I can only speak about the Mallet, I like it a lot.  My max is O-72, it looks ok to me on that.  Whistle steam is great!

All great engines, I have the j1 and it looks and runs great.  It has the blow down effects which are cool.  I have seen the mallet and it is great also, has whistle steam which is a favorite for me and my son.  The Challenger I have seen and run it.  It is a great engine with great sounds.  It may also be the only one with dynamo steam effects.  I have seen a few black ones left yet.  If this is what you are looking for drop me an email in my profile and I may be able to put you onto some leads.
