Grass Mats

I always used Woodland Scenics just because the local LHS carried that.  I doubt there is much difference.  

The Woodland Scenics ready grass vinyl mat looks like the best. I always disliked the paper backed product. You can even shape it with a heat gun.

Are the others vinyl or paper?

Never seen/experienced the JTT grass mat.  I believe the Bachmann is a paper-backed product.  Walthers (Life-Like) also has grass mats...paper-backed, dyed sawdust, shed like a long-haired dog or cat!

But the vinyl-backed WS product is nice for a variety of reasons...  For those who simply want their mat to lie flat....no contours planned...the WS product is MUCH better off-the-roll than a paper-backed product...it lies flat!  Then, as Moonman said, you can heat form it into some mild contours.  Also, you can remove some of the 'grass' (finely ground foam) with a plastic putty knife in order to create/paint another feature such as city/rural road, sidewalk, etc....all of which is covered in the instruction sheet and/or how-to WS website. 

It's an excellent premium product priced accordingly.

I would assume that the grass mats would be for a down and dirty covering.

How well does it look if you try and mix it with other forms of scenic stuff.

I used an alternative product, carpet. Not the indoor/outdoor variety, but I found a very nice dual color green tones that was of high quality.

Since your layout section is only 4x8 you may want to check out some more realistic mats used for military dioramas.   Build-A-Rama has 24"x12" mats which you can get on ebay for $24.99.
