Thr arrows are helpful. Back in the day you couldn't go against the arrows. Lately it is not hard to go against the arrows. You do get some bad looks. One older lady stopped me last York to explain the arrow system to me

They are more necessary in the member halls(Red/White/Blue/Silver), you will see them there most likely everywhere (unless one got peeled up off the floor).
You won't see them in Purple, it is spread out enough in there now (unless there was a massive increase in tables this meet! ) that they aren't needed.
You will see them on Orange, but primarily only in the "front half" of the room where tables are set up in the back-to-back format from aisle to aisle. The "back half", small side room(s), and first aisle or 2 in from the side walls in the "front half" don't have them where it is set up in booth format, as the aisles are much wider there and arrows are not needed as much. I think there occasionally has been a situation in the front of Orange where 2 adjacent aisles may have had the same direction arrow. If you bump into that, it's easiest to just back track one aisle to turn around and then skip over the most recent aisle you just looked at to pick up the new one.
All common sense, but if it was common, there would be no announcements.

If you see an arrow, follow it.
I miss the dealer from the Brown Hall who would put his own arrows on the floor, and they all led into his display, but wouldn't lead you out. He's now in Purple, without the arrows. I asked him about the arrows, and he said that the powers that be are not amused by them.

The Henning's booth in the orange hall sometimes has arrows that curve into the display, it's just good fun. There really isn't much observance of the arrows in the Orange Hall nowadays, at least not that I've observed.
When I first returned to York after a 20 year hiatus I was so excited to be back I immediately walked against the arrows. I had forgotten about them, but after seeing the second one I quickly corrected my course. I have noticed that many times the arrows are not needed, but when the halls are packed they are definitely needed. I just went to the New York comic con in the javits center and while that place is huge, there were so many people that I was wishing they had the same arrow system as York.
I am so excited to go back; thanks for posting this thread Eddie G, it helps build my anticipation. Have a safe trip, and I hope to meet you one of these Yorks.

Speaking of arrows, I wish the people who complain about them would try a little experiment -- walk through the Blue, Silver and Red halls against the arrows, and I mean the whole hall, not just one aisle, and on Thursday or Friday (it would be pretty easy on a Saturday), and then tell me how unneccesary the arrows are. The aisles in the White and arrowed area of the Orange halls seem to be a little wider and could probably accomodate the two-way traffic, but I still follow them.

In my opinion and observation, there is something to be said for allowing oneself some spontaneous moments and explorations down aisles that are arrowed against where you happen to be moving along one of the long transverse aisles that run the length of the Orange Hall, across the front, middle, and rear. Following rules has its place, yes, but in an adventure like the York TCA Meet, can't we follow impulses and spontaneity at least some of the time, I wonder.
We are there to play, which does not always mean behaving.

Better yet, do the experiment with a scooter!
Several times while sitting at my table in the Red Hall with the member across from me also sitting in front of his, it's a close squeeze when a larger scooter comes by to see if it makes it without hitting one of the chairs. (and the chairs are kept very close, it's not like we had them angled or sitting out in the aisle away from the table)
Not suggesting people shouldn't use scooters, of course. Just that that is likely part of the background on why arrows are helpful.

I can see both sides of the coin on the concerning their necessity. Like anywhere, I try to follow the rules that have been set up, whether I agree or not. As to the spontaneity of noticing an item that really pricks my interest in another lane; I can just imagine that by the time I get there, it will be sold!
In some of the member halls, especially on Friday, the arrows serve a very useful purpose, they really are crowded, and two-way traffic would be too much. Not so much in the Orange Hall or Purple Hall.
I just reset my WiFi by doing a re-connection, here's a video of the whole process. The LCS on the iPad finds it after this process. You'll notice I had to cross the room to press the WPS button on the router after I started the WPS on the WiFi unit.
I hope someone is selling some Lionel Coporate Tinplate! The charm of the old stuff with the controls of the new stuff.

Leaving the new home base at 0500 on Thursday for the 2.5 hour trek to the promised land picking up a friend on the way for the 3 day party.

Just found out that I will be able to attend this year - Only my 3rd time and 1st time in about 5 years I think!
Will be driving up with a friend Stave Maier. Looking forward to meeting many of you who I've only conversed with or traded goods with here all these years. This forum has certainly expanded my enjoyment of the hobby - Thanks OGR!
Been in the east now for several days with a few other Californians. We've been able to visit some good friends (Ted Bertiger & Frank Maguire) and enjoy some great train activities.
We're heading into York tomorrow, Tuesday, to enjoy the start of the semi-annual toy train mayhem.
I thought I had nothing to look for, but luckily my roller coaster in my "amusement" area crapped-out 2 days ago, and now I need to fill a 11" x 5" space. No, I do not want to spend $140. for a new one to break.
I am glad to report that I saw and spoke with Eddie today, who was having a fine time at the Wyndham. We chatted for a while and he told me that this might be his last York meet. I told him that was what he said last time, and that as long as he's enjoying it, he should continue to come. Hopefully, he will.

Assembled shadowboxes until 10:00 last night. Arrived at York at 4:00 today, emptied the car and set up in the Orange Hall. Stop in on Todd Architectural Models to look at semi-custom shadowboxes (built to order as you walk the aidles), shop the new parts display and bring an idea of an historic building for the next project.
