As a boy I never did get that elusive American Flyer Hudson that I always wanted. Started with a 310 K5 and later got a 312 I think it was plus several diesels but always wanted the big Hudson. Has anyone here added scale details, painted out the white walls and tried to make a 'real' scale model of one?

I have not. If you want to see some examples of Gilbert steam including a Hudson customized and detailed, take a look at the engines on Joe Deger's site. As you may recall he is the author of the Greenberg American Flyer reference books. The site is http://sgaugers.org/TD/TD_JD.html.
As an example of what can be done with a Gilbert 0-8-0 look at tuveson.com. Under TMCC for S, scroll down to Robert Buckner's Custom 0-8-0 and Northern.
As for me, I continue to live with the slim hope that Lionel will make a Legacy J3a Hudson in S gauge.

Sounds like a neat project. For better drivers Doug Peck used to have some and the AM driver was also available in Hi-rail. Don’t know the current status of either. Cast detail parts for S scale are available from several sources.
Precision Scale Co has a bunch of catalogs; S, O, and general. I have bought from all 3 catalogs.
River Raisin, Tomalco, and SSL&S are all S scale castings. I have bought castings from all 3.

River Raisin might be no more. the SSL&S catalog I have is a .pdf and I can't get it into this post, there must be a way.
Anyway, you won't find everything you want or need from just one source. I would suggest collecting some pictures of the loco you want to detail and see what you might find to add. Of course to be even more 'scale' you can grind off details that are part of the Gilbert casting then add a cast part in its place. Just depends on how far you want to go.

Nimco offered "scale kits" for the Flyer engines ..basically scale wheels ...
