I have a Lionel Legacy B&O Atlantic that I want to change to PRR by simply renumbering the cab and relettering the tender from Baltimore and Ohio to PENNSYLVANIA.

I am a complete novice with this and have never repainted or decaled a locomotive.  So any advice on specific techniques and specific products or vendors for this project would be very much appreciated.

I am not too concerned over details of the locomotive, and I would imagine the B&O and PRR versions of this locomotive are pretty much the same except that the PRR model was produced with the red roof and tender top.  If that are any big differences between the two models, please let me know!  Also, if there are any easily added or changed details to improve prototypical similarity, please let me know.

Thank you!

The Lionel Atlantic is based on the PRR prototype, so it is an easy redo.  I'd probably take the cab and tender off the chassis, paint them in a glossy black paint (decals adhere better to glossy paint), and use commercially available lettering.  Microscale used to make an O version for PRR passenger locomotives which were painted with gold leaf lettering until 1952.  I swear by Solvaset to set my decals and get them to snugly fit over details.  Once everything has cured I spray a dull coat over everything and reassemble.

Just a suggestion.  I have the PRSL version of this loco that I'd like to paint to PRR as well.  However, I'm getting out of PRR 3 rail as most of my PRR is 2 rail now, so I might just sell it.  Who knows?  It's a good loco.

I hadn't considered the number boards.  Does someone sell replacement number films?  Or else, how do you go about changing that.

Also, I will need to figure out an appropriate road number.  I like that kind of research, but any help on that would be great too!

Finally, the B&O plate on the nose will need to be switched to a keystone.  Suggestions for a vendor for such a thing?

As I was expecting, even though its a PRR design, it might be best to sell it and just get a PRR version (or not, since I have an MTH).  :-)

You can remove the factory lettering using MicroSol. Let the solution soak in for 5 minutes and reapply. After another 5 minutes firmly apply tape over the lettering and remove it. It will take a few tries but it will all come off without damaging the paint. The engine will need a gloss coat before applying new decals. Use Microset and followed by microsol to apply the decals. After they are set go over with a semi gloss.
