I picked up a collection with the below gondola in it.  There are no markings on it as I think it has been repainted at least once.  I've tried comparing it to photos of prewar Marx, Lionel, and American Flyer.  The couplers seem to be similar to Lionel latch couplers.  The strangest part is the mounting of the wheels.  It looks like a second set of wheels could go in the extra holes but I don't think they would fit.

I still find it fascinating what turns up in these old collections.  After 30+ years of buying many collections, unusual items or items I've never seen still pop up.

Thanks for any help.PXL_20230617_121526839PXL_20230617_121535305PXL_20230617_121543020PXL_20230617_121558543

I went through my TCA book covering Lionel 1900-1943. I didn't see anything in there like this car. You don't have a clear shot of the coupler, but it appears the "finger lift" points horizontal whereas Lionel's ticked up a bit, which also suggests another maker. The coupler could be a knock-off of Lionel's. Lionel introduced that coupler in 1924, which perhaps begins to date the piece. Hope others know more.
