Can anyone who has done this give me directions on which screws need to be removed on the Lionel MR S-3 to get inside?

Lots of screws underneath and I'm trying to figure out the right ones.

Seems the cab roof latch fell off and I can't get a finger under the opening to reinstall it to the plastic clip on the underside wihout removing the shell from the frame...

I'm thinking while I have it apart, I can switch the constant on red Mars light wire to the cab interior circuit..

Thanks,
Joe

JC: Mine's in storage right now, so I'm going on memory. There are one or possible two inside the steam cylinder casting; the other two are just under the cab assembly and are pretty much logical. The real trick in getting the boiler top shell off is having to remove the engineer & brakeman figures from their seats inside the cab. The cab will not clear until you remove the two figures. They pull straight up (with much effort); you'll likely have to start them out via a small flat blade screwdriver.

I had to do an early boiler removal to re-glue the 90 degree elbow that routes the smoke to the cylinder casting.

Also, be VERY careful of the stanchions for the handrails-they are extremely fragile. You will have to get the handrails out of the holes in the pilot casting.

A two second fix that appears a bit too difficult for me.  Can't figure out why the roof hatch fell off to begin with..

Can't recall if its been a year since this engine was released? Could send it in but I'll probably just leave it alone until something else forces me to get it repaired.

Thanks,

Joe
