I have recently returned to model trains and I am in over my head.  I have been trying to identify many of the parts from an estate collection that I purchased (Jon Cady's).  So far I am using Greenberg's Repair Manual and ebay listings to identify parts. This collection was not as organized as I expected but I bought it for the many Hiawatha train parts.  Is there a better method? Literature that anyone might recommend.  I know this is not a quick process, but it is very entertaining.  I am guessing that pictures will be posted with my asking for help identifying.  Thinking of sponsoring a contest with gift card prizes for the top three people that ID parts correctly.  Maybe $25, $50, and $100.  The time it would save me would make it a good investment when I am stumped.  Is that something that would be allowed in the forum?

The first part is pictured.  A 763 Hudson ash pan with builders plate but it is not a 763E as I have found.  In the information that I have come by, I only see the 763E.  Did Lionel make a 763 (I don't have my pre-war Greenberg's yet)

The second appears to be a 773 steam chest.  It appears to be in very good condition and surprising if it is a 65 year old part. How could I determine if it is vintage prewar or from the 1960 re-issue?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Louie

As you may've noticed by now, Lionel at times used a casting # on a part but cataloged it with a different #. Like the way a 700E scale Hudson has a cab # of 5344. DK
