Recently I attended a model train show here in Australia.  I thought I’d share a few photos.  Strictly speaking, these do not qualify for this forum as most are not O gauge.  However so much work has been put into the scenery on some of these displays, I thought you’d enjoy seeing them and maybe get some ideas for your own layout.

Is the beautiful station complex with all the chimneys and the clock tower a model of an actual station in Australia?

Yes.  You are correct.  This is a model of the actual station in a 1850s gold-rush country town called Maryborough, in the State of Victoria.  There’s much speculation why such a large, ornate station with 25 rooms and a clock tower was built in such a small town in 1890.  Some think it was an error because the station was bigger than ones in major cities including the State capital Melbourne.

Mark Twain visited Maryborough in 1895 and there are two different versions of how he described it.  One version says he described it as "a railway station with a town attached".  The other version is he said “you can put the whole population of Maryborough into the station with a sofa a piece and have room for more”.

Here are a couple of photos of the actual station which was closed in 1993.

I also saw a YouTube video of the model station which is said to have taken a club 10 years to build.
