Every time I try to access the Lionel website at Lionel.com with my iPad, it takes me to Lionel.com/mobile which has very little info on it. Why does it do that and how can I access the standard Lionel website from my iPad?

Bottom part of the mobile site Lionel has a link to access the full site, try that. Works on my Android phone.
The Lionel web site is not set up for a mobile device like your smart phone or iPad. What you get is what you have, sorry.
I cannot speak for the iPhone however I can speak for the iPad. As Greg has pointed out, at the bottom, you will see two words that say full site. Click on that and you will get the full site to include catalogues and so on.
Using the "full" site on an iPad works just fine for me, including reading catalogs by using the Full Site link.
If you run into other sites that only redirect to a mobile site without any option to go to the real one there is one web browser app called Atomic Browser that I have that allows an iPhone or iPad to "spoof" many other browsers, including IE 8, 9, safari desktop, etc. And you get to the regular/normal site. Maybe other apps allow this function as well.
