From the various reports on the OGR Forums, its seems like the Lionel Vision UP Big Boy is having very strong sales/pre-orders. Probably because it offers beautiful detail and innovative features. But I wonder how many of the preorders are the result of speculation or the IPO-like frenzy of the BTO marketing plan.

Lionel’s Built To Order format for the new Big Boy and Polar Express Scale 10th Anniversary Gold Berk and cars is most likely a reaction to the challenges of manufacturing high-end model trains in China, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of similarities to an Initial Public Offering on the New York Stock Exchange.

I personally do not buy trains as an investment. If I did though, I would think the Big Boy would be a good bet to buy at preorder prices and sell as soon at they are released. That’s how people make money on IPOs.

If the BTO becomes the new IPO, we can expect continued and regular innovation accompanied by ever increasing prices. Is that good for the Hobbyest? The Collector? The Speculator? All of the above? or None of the above?

No trains for investments for me either, strictly for pleasure. My heirs can do with them as they see fit when I'm gone.  I also don't have any steamers, nor do I plan on ever having any so my thoughts on this are probably biased. But, from my point of view, I would not pay the $1900-$2000 street price for the VL BB new, so I sure won't be paying more for it after it is released. This is also way above my price range for any one piece of train equipment, new, used or otherwise, so again I'm biased here.

I do think there are some folks that won't order the VL BB for what ever reason and will regret it later and really want one, so sales will probably always be possible, but at what price? Depends on how bad one wants it I guess. So for the speculator I have no idea how they will come out on this one? My guess would be a the ability to lose a lot more than you could make. I for one would not want to take the risk on this. Looks like Lionel might be thinking along the same lines with the build to order plan for this one.

I think it's probably good for the hobbyist and collector as far as Lionel being able to make this nice, extremely full featured and detailed steamer for those that want it. Also with the build to order system Lionel shouldn't have to worry about losing a ton of money having made too many and not being able to sell them all. Or having to blow them out at a big loss. That's good for all I think, gives people a very nice engine and Lionel stays healthy to make more trains for us in the future.

We will probably never know the actual sales figures of the VL BB, but I think it sure would be interesting to see just how many of them do sell. One indication might be whether Lionel does or does not offer more items like this in the future.

Yes, that's correct. It goes on the Unpublished list along with LMFAO.

I must add this one, just for the creative aspects. Now we must have one for DCS so our MTH friends don't feel deprived.

Doesn't Conventional Suck?  Too crude?   (btw, I had always thought NFW was Norfolk & Western!  )

Personally I really like it (DCS),   but we don't want to offend our friends that are still operating conventionally.  Very delicate, these things are!

I'm sure N.Q.D.Y. and Allan were thinking Norfolk & Western as well!

Just a little tongue-in-cheek!  I'm a conventional operator after all!

DCS = Don't Consider (this) System?

OK  (Only kidding)

It would not surprise me if people did this -- they buy all sorts of idiotic things as "investments."  Intelligent people do not conflate hobbies with investments.

EIEIO

Jerry

Would be happy to add this also, but I don't know for sure what EIEIO stands for? Could it possibly have something to do with farming or livestock?

You all are good with these!

From wikipedia:

Enforce In-Order Execution of I/O, or EIEIO, is a machine code instruction used on the PowerPC computer processor which prevents one memory or I/O operation from starting until the previous memory or I/O operation completed. This instruction is needed as I/O controllers on the system bus require that accesses follow a particular order, while the CPU reorders accesses to optimize memory bandwidth usage.

Well who'd a thunk it? Could have sworn it had to do with and old farmer...

I would suggest that the wording of the acronym was somewhat contrived in order to produce the result. Having devised many similar acronyms over the years, I can assure you that humour is essential if you wish to remain moderately sane.

Was kind of thinking that, but didn't want to let on. I need that essential humor also, makes everything so much more tolerable. I would have never made it through my working life without it! We need a bit more of it around here sometimes. You happen to be pretty good at adding that humor, and it's always appreciated.

BTW, I always thought BLT stood for Big Long Train, now there's a sandwich trying to steal that one?

Thanks Rtr12.   I had never thought of BLT as Big Long Train, only as a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich. A dietary staple that provides at least 3 of the major food groups in one yummy meal.
