Strangely, my Alco C-420 from the early 2000’s doesn’t have light up number boards.  I find this odd, as this was a higher end product in its time.  Even most of my old MPC era conventional & low end locomotives have lighted boards.

I’ve researched a few DIY routes, but is there a vendor that produces backlit number boards?  Not looking for anything fancy, and I could certainly trim something to fit. I just want the correct #409 displayed.

Thanks...

I'll be a bit surprised if you find that will be an exact fit.  Why not make your own?  I cut them to size out of a thick clear plastic base.  I print the numbers white on black on standard bond paper in my laser printer.  Cut to fit the plastic base and glue it on the inside.  Hit with a coat or two of clearcoat to protect it, and then glue it in place with canopy glue (Tester's Clear Parts Cement and Window Maker).

Obviously, you have to remove the solid plastic to install the lighted number boards.  I drill a hole or two and then finish the shape with small files.

It's been a few years since I made them but I bought white inkjet paper in ebay and printed white numbers on a black background. I had to experiment first to get the size correct on white paper. The reason for white paper is inkjet printers print clear if you select white and that's the reason for black background. The black will print as the white numbers are clear and the white decal paper will be the numbers. You go into your fonts and you can set it up.

I'm sorry I'm not good at giving instructions like this but it did work great. I made them for some MPC Geeps I have.
