I am not an expert on holograms and hologram projections but I have thought that issues such as black smoke and fully voluminous smoke from engines could be achieved with hologram projections.

I would like input from others on this especially from those who may know alot about hologram projection.

One main issue I see with it is the ability to keep the projector aimed at the stack with pinpoint accuracy while the train is moving around the layout, whether the projector was hypothetically small enough to mount on a car on the train or more conventionally at some fixed point on the layout or room.  Lots of variables like lateral motion & discrete changes in speed or acceleration to factor in, can make for a pretty complex (read: expensive) system.

That's sort of what Marklin is working on...passengers going in and out a car....
