Hi Guys,
I have a K-line 4-6-2 Pacific Steam engine that I got a while back. It was from 2003 with TMCC in it. I have no smoke in either conventional or TMCC. Can anyone give me some tips I can try prior to sending it out for service?
Thanks,
Jim

Most all K-Line engines use a Post war type puffer unit. Two common problems are the resistor burning out or the hole between the piston and smoke chamber getting clogged. Remove the shell (3 or 4 screws) and then just pry up the top of the smoke unit.

Have you tried the on/off smoke switch under the engine? Don
The other thing that often happens is the puffer piston gets hung up or seized in the barrel, and won't move. It is pushed up by a lever running off a cam on the front driver axle. It returns by way of a fine spring above it, and if it seizes up, the spring won't move it.
Very easy to service once you get the shell off.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the tips. I took it to the shop. It has a fan driven unit. We have no fan movement. All other TMCC features work fine.
Thanks,
Jim
I have an earlier one with the puffer unit and the very thin O-ring on then pistion failed so the repair guy just took it out stating that he cannot get them anymore. Ideas? It really wokred better with the O-ring installed.

If you have the original O ring you should be able to measure it and get one from a variety of sources. You will need the outside diameter, inside diameter, and thickness of the O ring. Try this site for a start. Either Viton or Buna-N material should work.

I've had several fan driven K-Line units that the fan is seized up. I have been able to open them up and clean the smoke fluid out and lube the fan and get them running again. I believe they use the same motor as some Lionel units if you need a motor.
I've yet to run across one with a burned out resistor, I've had the triac on the R2LC go a couple of times and stop the works.
