Hi-  I'm going to have 3 different Passenger Sets by K-Line and am wondering about their value.  All 3 seem brand new and if not, like brand new.

1) Chicago & Alston 6 car Heavyweights.   RPO, Parlor, Baggage, Diner, Coach and Observation.  18" long each.

2) B&O 4 car Madison set, 21" long each.

3) NYC Aluminum 4 car Streamlined set.  Also 21" long each.

Any value ideas welcomed.  Tnx

Depends on if yer' buyin' or sellin'...

It looks like you're buying, because you don't have them yet.  Unless you are somehow just "coming in to them", then it looks like you're selling.

Or are you looking for an insurance quote because you are going to just enjoy them, whether in the boxes or on your layout/shelves?

I suppose either way, you could check recent eBay sales(not asking prices) for a good yardstick(consider the shipping too).

A lot has to depend on what condition they are in, also what railroad and how many were made by K-Line. Some stuff by K-Line is very highly sought after while other K-Line stuff will set on shelve for years.

The set of passenger cars that I want to buy from K-Line are the Reading Company's 'Reading Crusader' cars.

A little side note about the K-Line heavyweight passenger cars, their truck assemblies used to fall apart because of zinc pest or poor quality casting, mainly 16 and 18 inch passenger cars(4400 series) had this problem. Most passenger cars will have had their trucks replaced by now, so it should no longer be a big problem.

I have an add-on or unpainted heavyweight that this happened to, so I replaced the truck assemblies.

I think I have him on my alert list but unless you have a smart phone or a computer attached to your body by the time you read the e-mail the items are gone. They only last a few minutes.

My suggestion would be that you put the B&O cars up for sale, sooner rather than later.

The definative set of scale B&O Columbian cars will be the Golden Gate Depot set when the B set issues at the end of the year (set A - the coaches have already shipped.)  The GGD set are expensive (retailing for about $200 a car), but my guess is that when the B set comes out (observation, dome, diner, combine), that some folks who currently hold the K-Line 21" cars will put them up for sale.

My free advice (you get what you pay for! ) is sometimes to be patient on what is posted on the sell board.  I have had stuff sell in a matter of minutes, other stuff take a couple of days or even weeks.  While a lot of folks check the boards several times a day, others (especially those that read the forum but don't participate) will only read them once or twice a week.

Repost your cars and leave the posting sit for a couple of days, if it doesn't sell then lower the price.

Jim
