I have been thinking of doing a lash-up between my two Lionel engines. The problem is one has LEGACY (Rio Grande Mikado), and the other has TMCC (NYC S-2). Is it possible to run the two together, even though they have different speed steps? I don't want to try until I get an answer so I don't wreck anything!

maybe. turn off odyssey on the legacy and put both units on the track about a foot apart and see how they preform.
You would want to run your Legacy Mikado under TMCC mode. That way they would be compatible for a lash-up. I am not sure whether or not the NYC S2 has Odyssey.
You can then lashup the two locomotives under TMCC,
